Over-apology & The Right to Share Space

This week I speak to the cultural phenomenon of the knee-jerk "sorry" - how often in public we default to apologizing anytime we cross paths too closely with another. I argue that this tendency is an extension of people pleasing, a minimization of self and a reflection of the belief that we don't deserve to share space. Exploring the topic can give rise to more self-(and other-)awareness and offer an opportunity to practice realizing your inherent worthiness in this common everyday occurrence. This episode is for all the people-pleasers out there... Well, actually, it's for ALL of us - because we are ALL, to a certain extent, people pleasers… I’m not a big fan of oneself identifying as a people pleaser, anyways. Because, truly we all act out people pleasing behaviors, myself included. Thats just the nature of social beings living in a rapidly evolving social context.  When we say “I’m a people-pleaser”, we hold that belief close to our chest. And while helpful to acknowledge, I think that attitude makes change more difficult. It's more helpful, I believe, to recognize the behaviors…and that humans naturally do them to varying degrees. This episode highlights an example of such a behavior so that we can all become more loving, empowered individuals deserving and capable of equally sharing space. If you like this episode, please do me (and us all) a favor and rate the podcast, subscribe and/or share with a loved one! The most wonderful thing you could do is a sincere, thoughtful recommendation for someone who you believe will benefit form this episode. It would help me (help us) inspire the best in one another! Ep. 2: Impact vs. Intention

This week I lean into discomfort, in an effort to face hard conversations with honesty and mindfulness. I address the recent incident between the Dalai Lama and a young boy, a moment that can be taken any number of different ways, and which I believe offers a beautiful teaching moment where we can learn to discern the difference between impact and intention. This is a relational conversation and highly applicable in romantic relationships, as well as familial, friendships and work-related. Because while our intentions are often pure, our impact isn't guaranteed. Each of us understands the world and situations we encounter uniquely, bringing in our history, trauma and biases. It's important to understand that even when our intentions are good, we can still hurt others, and it's important for us to respect the subjective, and real, experience of one another. Holding space for that creates room for repair and reconnection. Conversely, when impacted and hurt, it's important to access our wise mind, at the bridge between our emotional and rational ways of thinking. This gives room to see the other for their goodness, rather than being pulled down into reactivity that assumes the worse, jumps to conclusions and closes the bridge for repair and reconnection. We can play both roles, sometimes even both at the same time. Bringing awareness to the difference between our intentions and impact can create space for honest conversations that bring us close together. To help us grow, heal and evolve. I hope you enjoy this episode, and that it gets you thinking, hopefully noticing something new about yourself. In an effort to make this an "idea lab", rather than an "echo chamber", I invite disagreement and want to keep learning myself - if you have any questions, comments or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out! And if you are digging these episodes, please write me a review and share with a loved one. It would mean the world to me (and help the world for us).
