Wicked's Jon M. Chu: Rewriting Hollywood's Narrative (TED Radio Hour+)

As soon as he began shooting home movies with a bulky video camera, Jon M. Chu knew he wanted to be a filmmaker. But after directing several franchise films, Chu felt uninspired by his work. So he sought out stories showcasing underrepresented actors. The result was Crazy Rich Asians (2018), Lin Manuel Miranda's In the Heights (2021), and now Wicked. Chu sat down with host Manoush Zomorodi in 2021 to recall his family's own immigrant story and envision how Hollywood could tell those stories too.
