6 months in the making, we sit down with the new president of UMBC, Dr. Valerie Sheares Ashby. After a semester with our student population, we check in to see how she came to be our president, how she feels about the campus so far, and get into some of our tougher questions. How does she feel about student voice? What work still remains for the campus? How long will all of this take?

If it's seemed like WMBC has forever been pitted against the school administration, this isn't entirely untrue. In this episode we discuss the complex history of WMBC, including its successes, failures, challenges, and survival in the face of animosity. We also discuss more recent station history with Koby Samuel, former WMBC Chief Engineer. Where has the station been? How does the station history influence the present? Where can WMBC go from here? We'll try to lay the groundwork on how to answer those questions in this episode.

UMBC's student voice is under attack. In the first episode of our series WMBC in Exile, we introduce some of our station officers and briefly discuss the current state of UMBC's student radio station. Our hopes for the future, interactions with campus administrators, our frustrations with their response, and plans for future episodes of this series are also discussed.
