Ep 19: Belonging In the Office

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: why do we want multiple people with different perspectives at the table? Because we know the value in that. How many blind spots are you able to see when you have people looking at it from different directions? But if they don’t feel like they belong, they cannot bring those perspectives forward in a safe space.”   -  Chelsea Burns   In this episode, we are talking about in-office culture. You know, cubicle locations, thermostat wars, the smell of tuna lingering in the post-lunch hallways… Do you remember these times with rose colored glasses? Or are you filled with dread at the idea of returning to the office space? We are seeing a clear trend to get employees back to the office full time. We talk about the pros and cons of this as well as a way to be proactive in your workplace situation. We also have an interview with Chelsea Burns, applied psychologist and marketer with a passion for elevating women. In her graduate thesis "A Sense of Belonging: Understanding the Female Entrepreneur's Connection to Self and Others," she uncovers unexplored and impactful findings about the power of belonging. The combination of her psychological insights and research findings empower other women with a framework for how to enhance their holistic selves through belonging. Chelsea has a Master of Science in Applied Psychology from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media from Baker University. She is currently the Director of Marketing and Branding at HFG Architecture in Wichita, KS, serves as the Community and Belonging Lead for FutureWomenX and volunteers as a mentor for RALLY sponsored by The Mom Project. In this conversation, you will hear: About the latest trend to get employees back in the office  Why in office culture can elevate women (but hinder highly-valued flexibility) Who is responsible for creating a sense of belonging (hint: look in the mirror!)  Why belonging is so valuable for companies and leaders to pursue Links:Design for Belonging by Susie Wise, Stanford d.school, et al.
