Word of the Day with Mike Quindlen – Slapdash

Word of the Day with Mike Quindlen – Slapdash

Mike Quindlen is a comic, actor, writer, and civil disobedient who travels the world making sardonic observations that often weave their way into his comedy. He is willing to expose and mock hypocrites…including himself. Mike is the host of the longest-running monthly comedy show in Baltimore (Second Saturday Shit Show at the Ottobar and is the founder and director of the Ellicot Silly Comedy Festival) He has opened for John Witherspoon, Doug Stanhope, JB Smoove, Alonzo Bodden, and Steve Hofstetter.

And he’s one of the first friends I made when I started comedy.

Today’s word of the day is “Slapdash,” done too hurriedly and carelessly.

Did you know: An early recorded use of slapdash comes from 17th-century British poet and dramatist John Dryden, who used it as an adverb in his play The Kind Keeper. “Down I put the notes slap-dash,” he wrote. The Oxford English Dictionary defines this sense, in part, as “with, or as with, a slap and a dash,” perhaps suggesting the notion of an action (such as painting) performed with quick, imprecise movements. The adjective slapdash is familiar today describing something done in a hasty, careless, or haphazard manner.

Word of the Day with Orchid Cameron – Bilbo

Word of the Day with Orchid Cameron – Bilbo

Orchid is an angry yoga teacher and an Asian-American comic who looks white (it’s complicated, okay?!) and has headlined and featured in several comedy clubs in New York and California since 2019.

As an actor, Orchid has trained at The Beverly Hills Playhouse and earned a B.A. in Theatre from Loyola Marymount University. She has performed in upwards of 30 independent short films including playing the lead role in “TNT” which won first place at the Newport Beach Film Festival. She has also directed and produced nine short films.

Today’s word of the day is “bilbo,” which is a long bar of iron with sliding shackles used to confine the feet of prisoners, especially on shipboard. Second definition: SWORD.

Did you know: First known use of bilbo as a type of shackle was in 1557, perhaps originating from Bilbao, Spain. The second definition of a type of sword likely also comes from Bilbao, Spain where the swords were crafted beginning in 1587. Bilbo is the name of the hero of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit (1937). His real hobbit name is Bilba, which is of unknown meaning, but this was altered by Tolkien in order to use the more masculine O ending. In the novel, Bilbo Baggins is recruited by the wizard Gandalf to join the quest to retake Mount Erebor from the dragon Smaug.

Word of the Day with Michael Palladino – Vanguard

Michael Palladino is a comedy person from Phoenix, AZ. He has been skating through life with his wit and face since ’84, with varied results. In lieu of flowers, the family of the deceased has asked that you bring Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Pretzels. He hosts the podcast Adult Humor.

In each episode, host Michael is joined by one of his comedy friends as they deconstruct the party jokes from old issues of Playboy magazines.

Do they hold up? Of course, they don’t. Can they be improved? Probably not. But it’s fun to listen to them try!

Today’s word of the day is “vanguard,” which refers to “the forefront of an action or movement. That meaning comes from the word’s original sense referring to troops moving at the head of an army.”

Did you know: Vanguard comes from Anglo-French avantgarde, from avant, meaning “before,” and garde, “guard.” In medieval times, avantgarde referred to the troops that marched at the head of the army. In time, vanguard marched its way as a word for the group of people who are the leaders of an action or movement in society, politics, art, etc.

Word of the Day with Erin Tracy – Askance

Erin Tracy is a stand-up comedian, host, and actor living in Los Angeles. She grew up in Southwest Florida as the child of public school teachers so she was essentially groomed to become a comic. Before making the leap to a life of comedy, Erin worked as a choreographer, director, and performer whose original dance theatre was shown in New York City, San Diego, and Tampa Bay.

Today’s word of the day is “askance,” which means “with disapproval or distrust” or “with a side-glance.”

Did you know: Askance, which etymologists believe may have been influenced by askew, comes from Middle English forms such as askaunce, meaning variously “in such a way that,” “as if,” “as if to say,” and “artificially” or “deceptively.” The word was first used in English in the 16th century with the meaning “sideways” or “with a sideways glance,” and writers over the years have used the suggestion of someone looking askance at something to express a number of feelings from disapproval and distrust to jealousy.
