Navigating Neurodiversity: Insights from a BCBA Perspective

Navigating Neurodiversity: Insights from a BCBA Perspective

In this episode, we met with our guest Abrar Shahin, a
clinical supervising BCBA from Circle Care Services to discuss embracing neurodiversity in children. Through a candid discussion, we explore various perspectives, including philosophies and trauma-informed ABA, building skills
and tolerance in children, their peers and adults, and the significance of accommodations over compliance.

We challenge the notion of "fairness" and redefine
it as getting what one needs to thrive. Our conversation also touches upon preventative strategies, and the unconventional methods that only people who work with autistic kids can understand like buying a child ice cream to curse
    in their room.

This episode also highlights the importance of teaching adult’s
empathy and examine the cultural shifts necessary for creating inclusive environments for children of all backgrounds. Take a listen!

Beyond Buzzwords: The Reality of Inclusion

Beyond Buzzwords: The Reality of Inclusion

In this thought-provoking episode, Laura and Kirby dive deep into the true essence of inclusion, challenging the notion that it's merely a trendy buzzword or a marketing gimmick. They start by demystifying the concept of inclusion, emphasizing that genuine inclusivity requires concrete policies, substantial adaptations, and significant behavioral changes, particularly from those in positions of authority and influence.

This episode highlights how adults, as the gatekeepers to accessibility, play a crucial role in fostering an inclusive environment. Whether it's in businesses, amusement parks, schools, workplaces, or communities, adults have the responsibility to implement and enforce policies that accommodate everyone's needs and ensure that no one is left on the sidelines.

Kirby adds to the conversation by sharing personal anecdotes and examples of inclusion done right—and wrong.

Throughout the episode, Laura and Kirby discuss practical steps
adults can take to promote inclusion, such as:

Educating themselves and others about diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Actively seeking feedback from marginalized or underrepresented groups.
Implementing adaptive measures in physical and digital spaces to ensure accessibility.
Modeling inclusive behavior and calling out exclusion when they see it.
