Don't wait for someone else to do it. Believe in your ability to impact the world. Be a changemaker ft. Geoffrey Mboya

In light of the recent protests in Kenya, many people are asking themselves, "Can I really make a difference?" "Does my voice even matter?" "Isn't it better to just stay out of it?" These are common questions that can hold each one of us back from taking action or speaking up. However, according to this episode's expert, inaction is not an option. Especially with what's happening right now in the world and, more specifically, in Kenya. We have no option but to do what we can to be part of the solution. So, for this one, the Yes Girls are exploring how to say yes to being changemakers with live studio guest, activist, community organiser, humanitarian, youth advisor, and sustainability advocate, Geoffrey Mboya (@resilient_mboya). Geoffrey was and still is on the front lines of the wave that began Kenya's nationwide protests against the Finance Bill, also dubbed the Gen-Z protests (and he is a Gen Z-er himself). He is actively engaged in community organising around health, the environment, and politics, and is certainly wise beyond his years. As an ode to Season 7, Akumu and Claire are doing the Yes challenge in the studio, alongside the guest expert during recording. All of this so as to make it even more blindingly obvious that you can say yes to something new even if you're short on time. So, they explore activism and community engagement first with the challenge that Geoffrey sets for them, and then they discuss why activism is so necessary for today's Kenya and today's world. In this inspiring episode, Geoffrey discusses: His personal journey to becoming an activistThe importance of community organising and its impact on social changeHow he overcomes obstacles and stays motivated in the face of adversityThe power of the youth and the role they play in shaping the futureInspiring stories of individuals who have made a difference and inspired him and others Tune in to learn more about the world of activism and the life of an activist. The antidote to bias. Critical thinking & why it is one of the most important skills today ft. Dr. Laila Macharia of Aspen Initiative Africa

How often do you think twice beyond your initial assumptions? How often are you able to think actively, rather than passively, when absorbing information as it's presented to you? Yes, for this one, the Yes Girls are exploring the power of doubt and the art of questioning situations in order to make better decisions with live studio guest, angel investor, entrepreneur, lawyer by training, and international business expert - Laila Macharia (@lailamacharia), who is the founding director of Aspen Initiative Africa and Co-founder and Chair of the Africa Digital Media Institute (ADMI). Remember, it's Season 7, meaning Akumu and Claire are doing the "learning something new" challenge in situ, i.e., in the studio, with the expert while recording the episodes. All of this makes it even more blindingly obvious that you can say yes to something new even if you're short on time. That means that this Yespisode explores critical thinking first through role-playing and then discusses why it is such a necessary learning for any human being in today's world. Laila pulls out all the stops to ensure the girls have several practical tips, tricks, and resources to enable them to think more critically.  After the 5-minute session exploring the famous moral dilemma known as The Overcrowded Lifeboat by Garrett Hardin, Laila goes on to introduce concepts such as the Six Thinking Hats by the DeBono Group, the Black Swan theory, why it is important to get out of your echo chamber, why diverse teams make better decisions, why it is important to "get off the dance floor and go to the balcony" for better clarity and so much more. Listen in to gain valuable insights into what critical thinking is, why it is such an important 21st-century skill, examples of how you can start thinking more critically, how critical thinking affects decision-making, and simple tips to make you a more discerning, deliberate and disciplined thinker starting today. Tune in as Laila and the Yes Girls challenge you to think critically. They'll guide you through the process of questioning assumptions and recognising cognitive biases to form more accurate judgments. _______________________ Important resources: A guide to critical thinking https://www.coursera.org/articles/critical-thinking-skills  Learn more about Laila Macharia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laila_Macharia Learn more about Aspen Initiative Africa https://aspeninitiative.africa/  Learn more about the Africa Digital Media Institute (ADMI) https://admi.africa/ Moral Dilemma: The Overcrowded Lifeboat by Garrett Hardin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifeboat_ethics  The Six Thinking Hats: https://www.debonogroup.com/services/core-programs/six-thinking-hats/ The Black Swan Theory: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory How to overcome echo-chambered thinking: https://www.henryford.com/blog/2022/02/why-its-important-to-get-out-of-your-echo-chamber  Why diverse teams make smarter decisions: https://hbr.org/2016/11/why-diverse-teams-are-smarter  Getting on the balcony in order to see situations more clearly: https://hbr.org/2002/06/a-survival-guide-for-leaders ____________________ If you enjoy the podcast, we love you so much! From baggage & grief-case handler to captain of your emotional ship: improving your EQ ft. Adelle Onyango

What's your Emotional Quotient (EQ)? Yup, for this one, the Yes Girls dive head-first (or mind-first) into the topic of emotional intelligence with live studio guest, media personality, author, social activist, speaker, poet, podcaster, entrepreneur, and honorary Yes Girl, Adelle Onyango (@adelleonyango), the mighty force behind @legallycluelessafrica. Remember, it's Season 7, meaning Akumu and Claire are attempting to do the "learning something new" challenge in situ, i.e., in the studio, next to the expert as the recording happens. All of this just to make it even more blindingly obvious that YOU can say yes to something new even if you're short on time. That means this Yespisode explores EI or EQ firstly through role-playing as the quintessential Yes Challenge. And who better to do this with the girls than Adelle?! She embodies personal development, self-awareness, and emotional healing beyond her obvious badassery. She sits in as the judge, challenger, and all-seeing, all-knowing guest expert. The Yes Challenge is a 15-minute role-play on relationship management, self-awareness and self-regulation, in particular. In the scenario, a couple, Amy and Jerome (played by Claire and Akumu) is discussing a relationship issue connected to control and freedom. Adelle then rates them, and we hear from her about how she says 'yes' to being the captain of her emotions in her daily life and how we can all benefit from improved emotional intelligence. This episode will give you valuable insights into how to improve your emotional intelligence, particularly in relationships and at the workplace, the benefits of doing so, the importance of empathy, social awareness and communication, as well as the ultimate goal of being self-aware before anything else. So tune in as Adelle and the Yes Girls explore how to move from handling emotional baggage obliviously to being captains and proper caretakers of our emotional ships. _______________________ Important resources: Emotional intelligence: How we perceive, evaluate, express, and control emotions: https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-emotional-intelligence-2795423  Emotional intelligence assessment or test: https://globalleadershipfoundation.com/geit/eitest.html  Find out more about Adelle Onyango here: https://www.adelleonyango.com/  Learn more about Legally Clueless (Kenya's first syndicated podcast) here: https://www.adelleonyango.com/legallycluelessafrica  https://www.legallycluelessafrica.com/  Listen to other episodes that are related/relevant to emotional intelligence or Adelle Onyango here: Having a gender debate with Oscar Koome & Eli Mwenda of Mantalk.ke: https://afripods.africa/episode/who-came-out-on-top-we-got-down/bc0a1d38-937a-4859-b408-21631a1ed550 Exploring inspiring Yes People in Africa and beyond: https://afripods.africa/episode/a-yes-odyssey-exploring-inspirin/3e67c5df-7eb3-49d1-9329-ccf2854f4f06  Be a proton ― stay positive with Sophorn Ban: https://afripods.africa/episode/be-a-proton-stay-positive-ft-sop/f01744b5-8c1b-4afc-ba80-7d77b67ec965  ____________________ If you enjoy the podcast, we love you so much! The primary responsibility to provide womb and board is apparent ft. Sally Kuria of Mama Tales Podcast - Yesticle

Parenting is an extreme sport and the adventure of a lifetime. Are you game? Will you say yes when the time comes? Or have you already? For the Yes Girls, it's about time—at least for one of them. Claire Baker was indeed baking a human being by the time this Yesticle was due for recording, so it made perfect sense to bring in a friend of the podcast to participate in this huge conversation and offer some much-needed advice for a first-time Yes Girl boy-mom. So, joining the girls in the studio is a Yes Girl in her own right, founder of Hadithi Collective, producer and host of Mama Tales Podcast (Instagram: @mamatales), and (as the girls like to call her) a certified "motherhood expert." Sally Kuria (Instagram: @sallymugure) is here to offer her insights and wisdom on what motherhood means/has meant for her, what it means to be a parent, how to manage stress as a new mom, how she finds time for self-care and personal interests as a busy mom, mom guilt, what it is, and how to overcome it, what it meant to return to work after maternity leave, how to involve fathers, what present fatherhood means, how to interact with kids (whether yours or not), and how to balance motherhood and relationships. The parenthood journey is a beautiful, transformative experience, but it also comes with challenges and unexpected turns. Listen in to discover what this can mean for you now or in the future when you say "yes" to being intentional about it. ____________________ Important resources: Find out about the Mama Tales Podcast here: https://mamatalespodcast.com/ Listen to the Mama Tales Podcast here: https://open.spotify.com/show/5ppCEBc7Zw3OjPtgLiRzZa?si=a5e9f01f65014340 ____________________ If you enjoy the podcast, we love you so much! Dear diary, did I really write this?! (Part 1) - Yesticle

This cringefest of a yesticle is proudly sponsored by an NSYNC-decorated A4 notebook-turned-diary. Yes. For this one, the girls are diving headfirst into the time capsule of a version of Akumu that you probably know nothing about. It goes like this: Akumu shares two relics from the ancient diary, and with Claire as her laughingly supportive cohost, they psychoanalyse the teenage musings. The first entry is a masterpiece that'll have you squirming either in secondhand embarrassment or firsthand laughter, similar to what can be heard from Claire and the chuckling male producers in the background. You'll then be whisked away into a second reading of Shakespearean proportions. It's a diary entry so eloquent it could rival the works of a Medieval Bard. So grab your snacks and join this crazy ride through the trials and tribulations of a millennial teenager. _______________________ Important resources:  The online diary and personal journal app Akumu mentions can be found here: https://penzu.com/ The gratitude practice Claire mentions is from the Being Yogini episode: https://afripods.africa/episode/i-m-not-too-good-at-yoga-some-da/73d9c04f-b8c1-4d1a-b220-421afc72ac55 Complementary Yesticles to listen to next: https://afripods.africa/episode/you-think-you-know-us-until-you/23eca0d0-afd5-4bc5-b2ce-820733ceb928 https://afripods.africa/episode/yes-yes-maybe-i-don-t-no-can-you/90d1f961-b239-4f31-a996-6d966f6cb386 https://afripods.africa/episode/a-yes-odyssey-exploring-inspirin/3e67c5df-7eb3-49d1-9329-ccf2854f4f06 ____________________ If you enjoy the podcast, we love you so much!
