The Tradwife Rises
Sarah Archer came by to make an episode from scratch. What's the real history of the American housewife? Where did the tradwife come from, and why? Is she okay? Will we be okay? And who is she churning all that butter for? Two lovely people speed running through mega news stories in American culture over the last several decades. I forgot about many of these stories but the memories come flooding back every episode.
You’re wrong about…
I just wanted to contact you about your latest episode about Trad Wives. I think your take on the appeal of the lifestyle is critically flawed and I think it’s because you had two people on the podcast who are not in traditional 9-5 jobs, have the opportunity to be their own bosses, etc. who are also not parents. There are so many systemic factors in play here that have nothing to do with individual choice and I think it was irresponsible of your podcast not to include them in the conversation. When talking about women “choosing” to stay at home, a very large portion of that conversation is the lack of maternity leave in the US, the lack of pregnancy leave, the exorbitant cost of childcare, and the lack of flexibility in the 9-5 workday schedule. I say this as someone who became a stay at home mom after battling staying in the workforce through a debilitating pregnancy, an incredibly short maternity leave, and almost a year of working as a mother until I was breaking down. The modern work force is intentionally hostile to working mothers. Once a woman is forced out, it is likewise intentionally difficult to get back in. Framing women leaving the workforce as “choice” and a “trend” without acknowledging the systemic forces at play is removing any of the accountability that those forces have. For many families, it’s not a choice for the lower earning parent (thanks gendered pay inequality) to leave the workforce. It’s the only option. That is an unavoidable part of the appeal of romanticizing being a “trad wife.” It’s a huge reason that many women turn to content creation to earn an income and there are so many SAHM/trad wife content creators. Just to be clear, I personally do not consider myself a “trad wife.” I am liberal. I believe in feminism and science. I have equal say in financial decisions in my household. I left the workforce with a plan for reentering. And I will never make my own cheerios.
