    ZODIAC: A TO Z - Puzzling Questions

This episode examines puzzling questions, including: Did two or more suspects commit the Zodiac crimes together? Was Arthur Leigh Allen the Zodiac? Why did police interview Allen shortly before the last known Zodiac murder? Will authorities discover “Zodiac DNA” which could finally solve the case? If so, what are some possible endgame scenarios? Was the Zodiac responsible for the murder of Cheri Jo Bates in Riverside and the strange writings associated with that unsolved case? Did the Zodiac keep “trophies” to help him relive the crimes?

BONUS CLIP: "Monster" Live @ The "Death Becomes Us" true crime festival in New York City

On March 24th, 2019, I joined a discussion panel assembled at the "Death Becomes Us" true crime festival in New York for a live bonus episode of the Monster podcast titled MONSTER: From Atlanta to the Zodiac, with producer/narrator Matt Frederick, producer/host Payne Lindsey, executive producer Donald Albright, and producer Meredith Stedman. The first segment focused on the Zodiac mystery while the second examined the controversial case of the Atlanta child murders. In this bonus audio clip of the Q&A session, I was asked about the issues surrounding the growing interest in true crime stories, including standards and ethics in reporting.

ZODIAC: A TO Z - REVIEW: “The Most Dangerous Animal of All” documentary series w/ Gary Stewart

ZODIAC: A TO Z - REVIEW: “The Most Dangerous Animal of All” documentary series w/ Gary Stewart

In this “unfiltered” review, Michael Butterfield (ZodiacKillerFacts.com) examines the FX/Hulu documentary series “The Most Dangerous Animal of All,” featuring Gary Stewart’s claims that his father Earl Van Best Jr. was the Zodiac killer. Stewart and his co-author Susan Mustafa claimed that their suspect was implicated by fingerprints and DNA evidence, handwriting analysis, and proposed cipher solutions. As usual, the facts tell a very different story.
Note to the listener: A previous episode stated that a review of the FX/Hulu series would be coming soon. This show was recorded last year but was delayed due to technical problems and other circumstances.

    ZODIAC: A TO Z - THE 340 SOLUTION: Questions & Thoughts

Listeners sent several messages requesting a new episode addressing various questions and thoughts about the new solution to the Zodiac's 340 cipher, which was recently solved by Jarl Van Eycke, Sam Blake, and David Oranchak (ZodiacKillerCiphers.com). Topics include: What does the new solution indicate about the Zodiac's skills as a code maker? Can the methods used to solve the 340 cipher be applied to the killer's two remaining unsolved ciphers? Did the Zodiac really believe that his victims would serve as his slaves in the afterlife?

Butterfield is in Control of All Things

You are not likely to find a more disciplined researcher on this topic than Michael Butterfield (the dude behind this). More than just a history of actual Zodiac Killer events, this podcast covers how and why the story changed over the years.. it is the story of the story. I don't think the Zodiac Killer saga can be told any other way at this point.. Especially after a first-rate film cemented the version of events from a third-rate book. Do you think the Zodiac Killer mystery is "basically solved"..??? Then this podcast is for you! Here, you will find nothing invented for narrative flair. No dumb rabbit holes with pet suspects.. And despite this discipline and dedication to detail, the podcast is listenable all the way through. If you aren't that interested in the ciphers, you can skip the very first episode. But you shouldn't, because the guest is David Oranchek of ZodiacKillerCiphers.com. But after that cipher deep dive in Ep. 1, the podcast moves quite fast.. It's well-paced with music and audio recordings, and it's all very well produced. So if you get sleepy during episode one, ignore your aching millenial attention span, and keep listening. This podcast is like an audio companion to what's presented on zodiackillerfacts.com, Butterfield's website.. It starts at the beginning, letting the police reports, original documents, witness testimony and meaningful press excerpts tell the story. Butterfield has also interviewed many key figures in Zodiac cases over the years (some of whose voices you will hear). Then, all of that info is analyzded by Butterfield and guests like Oranchek and Mike Morford.. A true crime writer / podcaster who's also studied these events for many years and approaches it all with rigor and a level of intellectual honesty that is hard to find. These guys are upfront and honest, to a rare degree, about what we do not know. I think that makes the story more interesting. This is the one.
