Satanism In Contemporary American Popular Music

Let's Talk About Satan: SatanismThroughout Modern American Music From Classical to Heavy Metal to Rap And Beyond Regarding Satanism...Religious studies scholars say "the very definition of the term "has a history of being a designation made by people against those whom they dislike; it is a term used for 'othering'." In the Bible,  "Satan" was used as an ordinary noun meaning "the adversary." In this episode, we explore some of the history of satanism in American music. What's the story behind the evil lyrics, and satanic iconography in heavy metal and rap over the decades? We'll discuss artists from Black Sabbath to Big L, from Three 6 Mafia to Billie Eilish, and more. The Devil's Chord Anton Lavey on the keysCredit: Church of Satan It would be heavy metal that took the Devils Chord and ran like a bat out of hell with it, with numerous metal bands such as Metallics, Slipknot, and Slayer, who even named their 1998 album Diabolus in Musica. But it was Black Sabbath, perhaps more than any other modern band that made the Devils Chord part of American mainstream. Black Sabbath, circa 1977Credit: Trinity Mirror ""Big L would later be cited as one of the pioneers of the rap subgenre known as horrorcore, a hybrid of gansta rap  which incorporated horror themes, Satanic iconography, and shock lyrics, and grew in popularity in the late 90s. ""But you know, I feel like Prince is with me. When I’m nervous, I’ll talk to Prince. In my solo act, when I do “Moonlight,” I wear this white wolfy coat — I put this coat on and I try to transform into a Dire Wolf from Game of Thrones. Prince: His Life In The Afterworld

We Chat About Prince: His Music, Last Days, and Current Life in the Afterworld What has Prince Rogers Nelson been up to in the Afterworld? This installment of Odddio goes a little off the beaten path to explore the answer to that question. The episode starts off with the spoken lyrics to "7." We then take a deep dive, to discuss the music of Prince, his legacy, growing mythology, and get a glimpse into his life in the afterworld. Three years since the reported death of Prince, there remain many unanswered questions, and conspiracy theories, around the circumstances of his transition. Prince Rogers Nelson would have been 61 years old this past June 7th. His appeal was, and still is, seemingly universal. It defies genres, and generations. People from almost every walk of life gravitated to the essence of who he was: a musical genius who was respected by peers and audiences alike, called the Mozart of his generation, and revered by fans. Since his death a number of psychics and mediums claim that he has been reaching out from the Afterworld. There is also a haunting photograph of Prince wearing a shirt that features the Eternal Prince Avatar. In the photo he sits at a piano, and has a series of avatars...behind him, symbolizing the many phases of his career. He stares intently into the camera. Fans have pointed out that the picture may have been a self portrait.... A picture that shows that his career was behind him, and the knew he was leaving this reality soon. ODDDIO: Somerset the Band, and Bob Lazar

Somerset We chat with Boston band, Somerset about their music, and UFO conspiracy whistle blower Bob Lazar. We start with a short Bob Lazar segment accompanied by "Cardinal Sin," the edgy single from Somerset's newly-released self-titled debut album. Hailing from the Boston area, Somerset is an up-and-coming rock and roll band inspired by 70's and 80's progressive rock, and 2000's alternative rock styles. They draw inspiration from a variety of artists including the Black Keys, the Allman Brothers. From the transcript: Bob Lazar is a famous whistle blower, or infamous depending on who you talk to. He claims that he was hired, allegedly, by the government in the late eighties to reverse engineer what we would call UFO's at a secret site called S-4, allegedly near area 51. He claims he saw multiple alien craft, one of which he examined, and that ran on an anti-matter reactor powered by Element 115, an element which at the time had not yet been synthesized. Over a decade later, Element 115 appeared on the periodic table. The band members tell us about their music-making process, and then share their ideas about Lazar and his claims to have back-engineered alien spacecraft for the United States government. What I find interesting about how people would react to knowing that there are aliens out there or among us is, I do agree that there would be some sense of panic or chaos, but I wonder where it would be directed because I think you could direct it at the extraterrestrials or at the governments of the world. And I wonder if is it both? Band member Dave from Somerset Download the transcript below.
