Cultivate Deeper Connections with Your Partner: Navigating the Complexities of Intimacy. With Dr. James Cordova

Welcome to Untangle I’m Patricia Karpas. Today’s guest is Dr, James Cordova, author of the book, The Mindful Path to Intimacy. Cultivating a Deeper Connection with Your Partner. James is a Professor of Psychology at Clark University and the Director of the Relationship Checkup Program in Worcester, Massachusetts. In this interview we discuss what it actually takes to maintain intimacy over time.
When we begin a relationship, it’s pretty darn wonderful,.. but as many of us know AS the years go by, the rough patches begin to crop up. We become vulnerable. More real. The prickly porcupine stages come. THIS is when it becomes really important to learn how to be emotionally skillful. How to navigate emotional triggers with self-awareness, wisdom and compassion. How to be truly present with one another. To listen deeply. to understand the impact we’re having on our partner even if it’s not our intention. And to practice repair after conflicts.
We often forget to do much of this…or it can easily take a back seat to busy schedules.
He emphasizes the importance of regular relationship check ups…just like our annual healthcare physicals.
Cordova provides insights into navigating the complexities of intimacy with lots of practical tools to help us connect with ourselves and our partners on a deeper level.
