Dealing With Shame and Guilt in the Family System - Episode 38

Dealing With Shame and Guilt in the Family System - Episode 38

Embarking on a heartfelt exploration,  with myself, Geo, as guest host this week, we grapple with the heavy shadows of shame and guilt, those unwelcome companions that have trailed many of us from childhood to the labyrinth of parenthood. With the sagacious Allison Garner, an executive coaching connoisseur, our roundtable pulses with the shared beat of parent's hearts, including tales from Anna and Juli. The dialogue weaves through the textures of leadership and parenting, discovering how the tenacity we admire in boardrooms can also fortify the bonds with our children, and how self-compassion serves as a beacon through our most testing times.

This episode doesn't just recount personal crossroads; it lays bare the transformative journey that follows. Through the act of journaling—a simple yet profound tool—we learn to 'get complete', fostering a deeper understanding with our children and ourselves, even amidst the stormy seas of adolescence.

Yet, the odyssey doesn't end there; it's in the ruins of a family breakdown where the seeds of discovery are often sown. I share the solace found in the embrace of Parental Alienation Advocates(PAA), where self-work became the cornerstone of my healing. Our candid discussions traverse the rocky terrain of divorce, co-parenting, and facing false accusations, concluding that transparency and ongoing dialogue are the golden threads in the tapestry of rebuilding trust and understanding within our families.

How to Combat Parental Alienation, Estrangement, and Erasure Through Non-Violent Communication Part 2 - Episode 37

How to Combat Parental Alienation, Estrangement, and Erasure Through Non-Violent Communication Part 2 - Episode 37

As an alienated father, I've walked the rocky path of connecting with my daughters through the thinnest of threads, and that's where I discovered the healing balm of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). With my guest, Mary Mackenzie, we unravel my journey, and offer you the tools to mend and deepen the bonds within your family, even when the waters of communication seem unnavigable. My story is one of listening, not just to the words of my daughters, but to the emotions and needs that drive us all, and it's a story I'm eager to share with you.

Through the lens of empathy and patience, especially in the turbulent teen years, we examine how to manage our own emotional tempests, and extend a bridge of understanding. I'll recount the surprising advantages of 'making wrong guesses' when attempting to empathize, a tactic that invites clarity and connection rather than distance. It's not just about weathering the storm, but learning the dance steps to move in harmony with the resistance of a blossoming young adult, respecting their pace and space.

In our heart-to-heart discussion, we pivot to the ripple effects of NVC in all facets of life, highlighting it's role in personal stress relief and enhanced communication. Mary and I also explore the channels of support such as the NVC Academy and community groups that offer solace to parents feeling the ache of estrangement. Glean wisdom from our open conversation, and consider this your invitation to practice NVC for more authentic, compassionate interactions that extend far beyond the family tree.

Have you ever found yourself in the midst of a heated argument, desperately wishing for a lifeline to navigate the emotional chaos? That's where my encounter with Nonviolent Communication (NVC) revolutionized not just how I speak, but how I live. Alongside the wisdom of Mary Mackenzie, a seasoned NVC trainer, we venture into the transformative realm of compassionate connection. This episode is far from your average communication tutorial; it's a deep dive into the very fabric of human interaction. We unravel the threads of NVC that weave through the toughest conversations, turning conflict into opportunities for growth and connection.

Embrace the shifts I share within my own family, where learning to engage rather than avoid conflict fostered a newfound tenderness between us. We share moments where empathy broke barriers, from guiding my mother towards understanding responses, to the surprising adeptness of young minds embracing empathetic listening. Bridging the Divide: Relationships in the Shadow of Parental Erasure PART 2 - Episode 35

Ever struggled with the delicate dance of blending families and navigating the shadows of parental alienation? I know I have. This week on Family Disappeared, join me, Lawrence Joss, alongside Steve and Alain—both fellow alienated parents—for a candid discussion on these intricate dynamics. We peel back the layers of introducing new partners to our children, the art of cultivating self-awareness, and the pivotal role communication plays in mending and forging family bonds.

Building a family amidst the remnants of alienation is akin to treading a tightrope of emotions. Steve opens up about finding strength in the empathy of his spouse, whose own battle scars from alienation bring a depth of understanding to their union. As we traverse the landscape of these formidable ties, we discover the necessity for emotional boundaries, and the profound effects our partner's support can have on our own willingness to be vulnerable. Our collective tales give voice to the silent hopes that life's milestones might just be the catalysts for healing fractured relationships.

The act of reconnecting with a child after alienation is a journey laden with a mix of trepidation and elation. We delve into the emotional intricacies of parental reconnection, highlighting the flux of joy and apprehension when a child signals readiness to rebuild bridges. Our conversation serves as a beacon of cautious optimism for those fostering rekindled ties, emphasizing the importance of savoring triumphs while staying grounded. For anyone bracing the path of reconnecting, or simply seeking to be more present for their children, this episode is an affirmation of the resilience of the parental spirit in the face of adversity.
