Peak Performance under Pressure with Dr Stephen Hearns

The Mind Full Medic Podcast

In this episode I meet Dr Stephen Hearns, an Emergency and Retrieval Physician, expert in mountain rescue and author of the book Peak Performance under Pressure.   Dr Hearns explains the arc of performance and his own pressure pump model described in his book, looking at components of pressure control, testing and relief valves to maintain optimal flow.  He discusses the science and psychology of performance in high pressure environments relating to organisations, teams and individuals.  He also gives very practical insights and application from his own experience. We explore the concept of Flow and finding the sweet spot between challenge and skills, effort and ease. He is particularly interested in metacognition, "thinking about thinking" and the dynamics of cognitive appraisal.  Whilst Dr Hearns works in the Emergency Medical field, this discussion and the insights are relevant to anyone looking to improve performance under pressure in work or play.
