Episode 4 - Dismantling Imperialism

We Teach Us

On this episode of We Teach Us Podcast, we look at imperialism and its negative impact on the school system in America. In the Do Now segment, I ask students, teachers, and parents the question: “What did you learn about Native Americans in school?” In the We Do segment, I speak to activists Valerie Adams and Tori Jackson about their insight and experience with imperialism in the U.S. school system. Valerie, Oglala Lakota and originally from South Dakota, and Tori, Muskogee and from Alabama are founders of Alabama Indigenous Coalition who united to successfully abolish Columbus Day and reclaim it as Indigenous People's Day in Tuskegee, Alabama, and are currently fighting against great resistance to do the same in Montgomery Alabama and beyond.
