You can afford anything, but not everything. We make daily decisions about how to spend money, time, energy, focus and attention – and ultimately, our life.
How do we make smarter decisions? How do we think from first principles?
On the surface, Afford Anything seems like a podcast about money and investing.
But under the hood, this is a show about how to think critically, recognize our behavioral blind spots, and make smarter choices. We’re into the psychology of money, and we love metacognition: thinking about how to think.
In some episodes, we interview world-class experts: professors, researchers, scientists, authors. In other episodes, we answer your questions, talking through decision-making frameworks and mental models.

Vicki Robin: Financial Independence After 70 [GREATEST HITS WEEK]

Vicki Robin: Financial Independence After 70 [GREATEST HITS WEEK]

We delve into the world of Financial Independence (FI) with a pioneer -- Vicki Robin, the co-author of Your Money or Your Life.

In the 1970s, Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez, from vastly different backgrounds, came together over a shared vision: FI as a life philosophy, not just a savings strategy. Their book, "Your Money or Your Life," which sold more than one million copies, outlined a three-dimensional approach to FI:

Financial Intelligence: Thinking clearly and objectively about money.
Financial Integrity: Aligning your spending and earning with your values.
Financial Independence: Breaking free from paycheck dependence and limiting beliefs about money.

In this podcast episode, Vicki will discuss a new dimension she's added:

Financial Interdependence: Recognizing the importance of giving and receiving within our communities and the world.

Vicki and I discuss how to move beyond "just the money" during the quest for financial freedom.

    In this episode:
-- Discover the benefits that come from frequently changing your habits
-- Learn why "fake it 'til you become it" is A.J.'s secret weapon for habit development.
-- Explore how extreme gratitude can transform your mindset.
-- Hear a cautionary tale of healthy living gone wrong.
-- Learn how to make any career or business connection by unearthing the way in which you're distant cousins (as everyone on earth is, at most, roughly 70th cousins)

Nuggets of wisdom to navigate life’s most critical spheres

I’m a creature of habits, and I tend to stick to what works for me. I came across Paula’s podcast when listening to a Bigger Pocket podcast episode, and I was intently drawn to Paula’s compelling yet clear and approachable communication style. I immediately subscribed to Afford Anything and set a goal to binge-listen all the podcast episodes.

I’m delighted to report that as of today, I’ve binged and listened to all the episodes and continue to tune in to new episodes every week. Listening to Paula has been transformational for me on a personal, professional, and intellectual level. The breadth and depth of the content she astutely curates for her audience covers pathways to navigate life purposefully and meaningfully by making time for what matters the most.

I will continue tuning in to every episode and look forward to applying practical guidance in life’s essential spheres: personal growth, professional development, and financial well-being.

I wish you continued success, Paula, and may you reap all the fruits of your hard labor.

Best finance podcast I enjoy so far

I have listened to about 10 different finance podcasts and Afford Anything is the one I enjoyed the most and the only one I chose to listen to every single episode from day 1 even though the sound quality is not the best. Her show is so different than others, and every episode is wisdom and information packed. I got a lot out from every single one. Paula has the great voice and sounded so professional and knows what she is talking about. I specially love she summarizes and articulates her understanding of everything especially complex issues in a very simple way to make average people understand easily. Keep up the great work, Paula.

god damnit, Paula - you're awesome

I just love the content you put it and what a meta cognition nerd you are. So glad you exist in this world. I saw on your insta you are pursuing graduate school and I am going to write in about how you arrived at that decision and what your process was. I am thinking about doing a PhD and keep (kind of) hoping someone will talk me out of it.
