Who’s a wounded healer? It’s any one of us who works in a caring profession and is bravely doing their own work, while helping others. My goal is to share the parallel journey we as healers walk along with our clients and how we attend to our own humanity while caring for others.

My podcast is about conversations and community building, what we can learn from each other, and how we can help heal each other. We’re cultivating a space where we celebrate vulnerability, authenticity and “showing up.”

It’s a place to meet people I think will inspire you, help you heal and grow – and who you can relate to at the same time.

I’m inspired by C.G. Jung’s “wounded healer” concept, where the healer’s own hurt that gives the measure of his own power to heal.

Another one of my heroes, Brene Brown, puts it best: “Mindfully practicing authenticity during our most soul-searching struggles is how we invite grace, joy and gratitude into our lives.”

Together, I hope this marriage of vulnerability and professionalism will inspire and entertain you...enjoy!

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can a Nonprofit Collective Model Work for a Private Healing Practice? With Vilmarie Fraguada Narloch

Virtual meet-cutes are my jam. Vilmarie Fraguada Narloch, PsyD, and I bonded on IG over our shared love for collaborative music-making and the radical regeneration of the group practice blueprint. She’s the amazing co-founder of Sana Healing Collective in Chicago, a non-profit committed to individualized, client-led approaches to psychedelic-assisted therapy for everyone, especially those most affected by the war on drugs.
If you’re curious about the collective decision-making process, earnings potential, and 501(c)(3) of it all (and, even if you’re not), this convo will shift your perspective on what’s possible beyond the bounds of our current group practice model.
GUEST BIO Vilmarie Fraguada Narloch, PsyD. (she/her/ella) is a licensed psychologist focusing on integrated treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She is an activist working to end the War on Drugs and advocates for science and reality-based drug education and harm reduction approaches for all. She approaches her work from a harm-reductionist and humanistic lens, focusing on the individual needs of the person, group, or community. She received a certificate in psychedelic therapies and research from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2018.

Janina Fisher - Spilling Tea Over TikTok Diagnoses, Evidence-Based Therapies, and the Ever-Evolving Nature of Trauma Therapy

It’s not every day that I get to chat with a pioneer in the trauma field, so gimme a moment to geek out over Janina Fisher, Ph.D. the esteemed psychotherapist, consultant, trainer, and author. She’s an international expert on the treatment of trauma, best known for her work on integrating mindfulness-based and somatic interventions into trauma treatment and an absolute legend.
Janina dispenses some wisdom during our conversation regarding the ever-evolving study of trauma,TikTok diagnoses, and therapists doing their own work (!). She also spills tea all over capitalism’s outsized devotion to evidence-based therapies. I’m here for all of it!

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can a Group Practice Retain Good Clinicians? With Cassandra Greenwald

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can a Group Practice Retain Good Clinicians? With Cassandra Greenwald

Happy clinicians are vital to a thriving practice, especially since not every therapist is interested in being a sole proprietor. So, how do owners navigate the tricky mechanics of operating a business while providing meaningful group guidance without losing their sh*t? Good question. Enter Cassandra Greenwald, LCSW, CADC, of Rowan Tree Counseling, with heartfelt answers for employees and owners.
We poke at some tender spots: an owner’s right to privacy vs an employee’s desire for transparency, individual ambitions vs collective objectives, and the financial realities of operating within a capitalist economy.
GUEST BIO Cassandra Greenwald, LCSW, CADC (she/they) is a therapist, writer maker, relationship builder, and connector first raised on the East Coast, then watered and grown in the picturesque.Pacific Northwest, and currently settled in the great city of Chicago. Cassandra works hard every day to be the queer feminist, anti-capitalist, social justice warrior of conservative nightmares.

Neil Shyminsky - Detoxifying the Manosphere With Soft Masculinity and Research-Backed Rebuttals

Neil Shyminsky - Detoxifying the Manosphere With Soft Masculinity and Research-Backed Rebuttals

Red pill-ers! Trad gender roles! Manly men, rawr! With an introduction like that, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Anne and I had joined the manosphere. No worries there. Instead, Anne has found a male ally who is making modest but meaningful inroads with cishet dudes, specifically the ones prone to tumbling down rabbit holes of toxic masculinity and misogyny. And his tool of choice is peer-reviewed, evidence-based research.
Meet Neil Shyminsky. By day, he’s an English professor at a community college in Canada. But by night. Professor Neil, as he’s known on most socials, is a content creator focusing on social theory and masculinity.
GUEST BIO Neil Shyminsky (he/him) is an English professor at a community college by day, currently teaching courses on Contemporary Literature and Human Sexuality. By night, he’s a content creator who talks mostly about social theory and masculinity, specializing in refuting the misogynist arguments coming out of the Manosphere.

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Transparent Should Owners be With Their Employees? With Rowan Tree Counseling Team

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Transparent Should Owners be With Their Employees? With Rowan Tree Counseling Team

I totally started this podcast on a whim––but not without a keen understanding of the pain points that group practice owners routinely encounter complain about. I’ve since realized that vital voices are missing from the conversation: group practice employees.
I extended an invitation via the BOPO Chicago Facebook group. Lucky for us, Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC, and Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC, owner and senior therapist, respectively, of Rowan Tree Counseling, answered that call. This convo is juicy, y’all!
We explore themes of responsibility, transparency, and intentionality from both sides of the group practice relationship. Our detour into the thorny subject of hierarchies and the urgency that often accompanies their abolishment is one that I didn’t anticipate yet totally appreciate.
GUEST BIO Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has been working in the mental health field since 2008. She completed graduate training and received a Masters Degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Andie began her career working in residential and community mental health settings, gaining experience working with individuals seeking relief from anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. She’s also worked extensively with clients recovering from traumatic experiences. She specializes in working with individuals seeking a greater sense of balance, who want to live a more values-aligned life, and those struggling with non-monogamous and other alternative relationships. Andie is anti-racist, Queer-allied, sex-positive, polyamory-affirming, and kink-knowledgable.
Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Professional Counselor and completed graduate training in Clinical Psychology at Roosevelt University in 2019. She has experience working with teens and adults experiencing severe anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders in partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient settings. Nadia has also worked with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and those healing from traumatic experiences. Her approach to therapy is integrative as she pulls from both more directive approaches (CBT, DBT) and client-centered guidance and support to treat anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, trauma, relationship concerns, and self-esteem issues. Nadia is also well-versed in ERP and has found it particularly successful in supporting individuals struggling with OCD. She is a native Russian speaker and can provide therapy in Russian and English.

Lori Beth Bisbey - A Realistic (and Encouraging!) Timeline for Anyone Healing From Sexual Trauma

For the sake of mutual safety, this episode is preceded by a content advisory regarding sexual trauma and minor-attracted persons. Please take care of yourself as you need, even if that means skipping this conversation.
Your body belongs to YOU. I open with this power-stance of a statement because I didn’t get that message as a child, adolescent, or young adult. In fact, I’ve only just begun to really grow into that knowledge as I heal from sexual trauma. Here’s another a-ha! from this episode: healing takes time.
I’m grateful to folks like Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey for repeatedly reminding me of these essentials. She has been a champion of sizzling sex without shame for 35+ years, and her work destigmatizes fetishes, BDSM, and non-monogamy. Lori Beth’s healing journey also provides encouragement for survivors of sexual trauma alongside a healthy dose of reality.
GUEST BIO Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey (she/her) is a psychologist, accredited advanced GSRD (gender, sex, relationship diversity) therapist, sex & intimacy coach, author, speaker and tv personality currently starring in Open House: The Great Sex Experiment, CH4 in the UK.  She has been working with people for the past 35 years helping them to create and sustain their ideal relationships containing sizzling sex without shame. She has a weekly podcast, The A to Z Of Sex® since 2016 and is currently touring the UK speaking about kink, fetish, BDsM, and non-monogamy.

One of my favourite podcasts

I have listened to Conversations with a wounded healer for probably almost 3 years now and I’m still excited about every new episode. I really love both Sara‘s variety of interesting guests/healers and her open sharing of her own healing and process. As someone in a healing profession in myself, I find Sara both inspiring and validating of my own experiences.

Connection

I’ve been listening to Sarah and her guests for over a year now and feel like it’s just the beginning. She has mastered the art of authentic openness with others and her conversations with her guests invite the listener to connect with them. Always excited to hear a new conversation with these friend like folk. Thank you for being you and fighting against the convention that has dragged us all down in the collective:)
Time to decondition!
