Science washing: decoding scientism in the beauty industry

In the latest episode of Green Beauty Conversations, we delve into the “science washing” that is rife in the beauty industry. This term, akin to its near neighbour “greenwashing”, refers to the use of scientific jargon to mask pseudoscientific ideas.
Last week, podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier, CEO of Formula Botanica, explored the nuances of so-called “medical-grade skincare” with Ana Green, Education Manager at Formula Botanica. They unpacked its role as a marketing term, and how its hype often misleads consumers about the quality and real efficacy of skincare products.
In this opinion episode, Lorraine unravels the broader implications of scientism or “science washing” in the beauty industry.

More Clean Sustainable Beauty

I so deeply appreciate the points of view of you and your guest.
More awareness, more education of chemical free, sustainable practices will always help.
I’m many years in the beauty industry and could no longer work with others because of the chemicals.
I had such brilliant training from chemists in the industry so I could understand hair from under the microscope because my job as an educator was sales. When my first daughter came along and had food sensitivities, this education really served me. Reading food labels for the food preservatives she was allergic to meant no more groceries for the most part. Not a hardship for me as I grew up in a house where everything was cooked from scratch.
That was 30 years. When people were first being introduced to Ritalin and behavioural drugs all we did was eliminate the additives based on color coding. The rule became an easy guide for her and caregivers. “Anything that was green, pink, orange, blue, purple, do not eat or drink. She reacted to all preservatives. Other parents would ask what our secret was. Their responses and even my family was negative. Oh that’s too much work. Oh we couldn’t live with out….Because it also meant sugar-pop, fast food. I share all of this because the beauty/hair industry won’t change the products used, the ingredients that are toxic til we change our way of living. And as you know, it’s so doable, but we;’ve been mass tricked by marketing tricks to buy a false dream of what beauty and glamorous is. Much love to you and your passion
