GOING MENTAL was born out of host Eileen Kelly’s desire to reckon with the shame she felt around her mental health journey. Despite early career success, internal struggles and a crippling personality disorder drove Eileen to leave her exciting New York City life behind and seek treatment at McLean — one of the oldest mental hospitals in the country. After five months and some serious self-discovery, she returned to the outside world looking for a way to disseminate what she'd learned in treatment and connect to others with similar experiences.

Each week, along with personal stories from Eileen, she interviews some of today’s most compelling media figures, artists, authors, and celebrities about their own mental health journeys, along with a range of experts who provide information and support around various mental conditions.

Fun podcast

Came for the Anna Weyant podcast and stayed because Eileen is a compelling interviewer.

Enjoyed until

The content and guests of this podcast are great. Eileen is a competent interviewer but girl… please stop cutting off and finishing your guests’ sentences. While some guests handle it gracefully, others are clearly thrown off by it every time, and it’s irritating to listen to.

After listening to dozens of episodes, this problem persists and I sadly have to stop listening.

Eileen, I hope you see this, I’ve been a fan since the tumblr days, I want to keep listening but this bad habit is a dealbreaker, especially in a competitive field like podcasting. I hope to return in the future.

Solo diagnosis ep

Hi! I listened to the last episode on your diagnosis with BPD and I must say you were so vulnerable and transparent with your experience and I commend you for that because it is such a sensitive subject. It reminded me that we are all flawed humans and all of our emotions are valid, truly. It is so nice to hear that you do not meet all the criteria for BPD anymore because it proves that treatment works. I think an episode on DBT is a very good idea! Also, the part where you talked about all the stigma around BPD within the medical community and that your therapist at the time probably thought it’d be more damaging to give you the diagnosis than not left me honestly shook. I’m myself living with the ups and downs of my mental health and I think you’re doing a great job at spreading awareness. I stumbled on your ig I think when you were already at McLean and since then your platform has been very helpful and I could definitely understand your suffering. It honestly inspires me to do the same and also have my platform and talk about mental health. It’s such an important subject. I guess this is more of an appreciative review lol but I just think interviewing/ any communication field requires way more skills than one might think so stay patient with yourself and I think you can only progress. :)
