What To Consider with Digital Assets and Estate Planning, with David Edey

What To Consider with Digital Assets and Estate Planning, with David Edey

Have you made your will and named an executor for your estate? Does your executor understand your wishes when it comes closing down your digital assets? If not, you still have some work to do. Anything that’s attached to a login ID and password can be considered a digital asset. If your executor isn’t prepared to handle your various online accounts after you die, it could cause problems.
David E. Edey is a Certified Executor Advisor (CEA) who has worked in the financial planning industry in Montreal for more than 35 years. No one likes talking about death and inheritances before they have to, but David has learned that having these conversations earlier rather than later will save time and money. I sat down with David this week to talk about digital assets and how you can prepare your executor (and your family members) to make life easier when you’re gone.

Easy Ideas; Encouraging & Non-Judgemental

After a huge student debt and a prolonged bad relationship, my finances are in need of a makeover. Somewhere along the way, I worked up the courage to meet with someone at my bank to ask for help, but it was like they were speaking another language. And while I didn’t understand the lingo, I certainly understood the representative’s tone: she was criticizing me and made me feel even more ashamed. Since then, I’ve been trying to fix things and get ahead on my own, but it can be hard to navigate and I get lost and confused.

A recent google search brought me to the MapleMoney blog and it’s been a total game changer. I’ve been devouring the content there and on this podcast. With little effort, I’ve already cut nearly $100 from my monthly expenses and I’m still going!

The host and his guests are kind and encouraging and there is never a hint of judgement. They use plain language and offer clear, real-life examples and simple ideas. Episodes are short and specific and often revolve around lifestyle as it relates to spending and saving (e.g. work/life balance, travel, starting a side hustle, tiny houses, Christmas shopping, even fitness!) And it’s not just about money: there are a lot of episodes about rewards and perks, like through store loyalty programs and credit card rewards.

It’s not just about investing and saving. There are lots of things I can do to improve my finances. MapleMoney breaks it down and makes it not so scary.

Thank you so much. You have truly changed my life and started me down an amazing path. I feel excited and inspired. Thank you.
