Today is Memorial Day So I'm re posting my Conversation with my favorite historian
Kenneth C. Davis is the author of Don’t Know Much About® History, which spent 35 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and gave rise to the Don’t Know Much About® series of books and audios, which has a combined in-print total of some 4.7-million copies.
In September 2020, Don’t Know Much About® History: Anniversary Edition was released by HarperCollins. A  revised, updated, and expanded edition of the book that started the series thirty years ago, it presents a complete survey of American history, from before the arrival of Columbus in 1492 right through the events of the past decade –from 9/11 through the election of Barack Obama and the first years of his administration. This 30th anniversary edition included a new preface, “From the Era of Broken Trust to the Era of Broken Democracy.”
Davis is also the author of the New York Times bestseller America’s Hidden History: Untold Tales of the First Pilgrims, Fighting Women, and Forgotten Founders Who Shaped a Nation.
In September 2016, his book IN THE SHADOW OF LIBERTY: The Hidden History of Slavery, Four Presidents, and Five Black Lives was published to critical acclaim. In May 2018, MORE DEADLY THAN WAR: The Hidden History of the Spanish Flu and The First World War was published. In October 2020, STRONGMAN: The Rise of Five Dictators and the Fall of Democracy was released. In November 2022, Scribner published Great Short Books: A Year of Reading–Briefly.
For more than 30 years, Kenneth C. Davis has proven that Americans don’t hate history, just the dull version they slept through in class.
But many of them want to know now because their kids are asking them questions they can’t answer. Davis’s approach is to refresh us on the subjects we should have learned in school. He does it by busting myths, setting the record straight, and always remembering that fun is not a four-letter word.
Other points of note:
•Davis has spoken about teaching history to teachers’ groups, such as the National Council for the Social Studies, and state and regional Social Studies conferences in Florida, New York, Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts.
Davis uses technology to reach out to schools and teachers. He has visited hundreds of schools around the country and the world via Skype, Zoom and other online platforms Davis speaks to both adult and student audiences. He regularly visits schools, and has spoken at such venues as the American Museum of Natural History, the New-York Historical Society, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, James Madison’s Montpelier, James Monroe’s Ash-Lawn Highland, and the Smithsonian Institution. Allison Jaslow graduated from the University of Central Missouri and Wentworth Military Academy and Junior College, both of which she attended on ROTC scholarship, before entering active duty in the United States Army. She has served on the Board of Directors for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, was a founding Director on the Board of the 2LT Richard W. Collins III Foundation, and was the first and only woman on the Board of Trustees for Wentworth Military Academy.  Jaslow is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a charter member of the National Parks Conservation Assn.’s Veterans Council, and was named both an Aspen Institute Ideas Festival Scholar and Aspen Security Forum Scholar. For her military service, Jaslow’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster.
Allison Jaslow is the CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, an Iraq War Veteran, and a dedicated public servant. 
Nationally, Jaslow is recognized as a leading voice on the impact of the military-civilian divide on our political system and as an authority on the unique challenges faced by women in the military.  A former Army Captain, Jaslow is also a seasoned political and communications strategist, serving on the staff of several Members of Congress, and as a White House communications aide. She’s a former Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), is a co-Founder of Operation Liberty and has recently served as an Adjunct Professor of the Practice at Duke University.
When she was previously Executive Director of IAVA, Jaslow led a national campaign to increase recognition of, and support for, women veterans. The “She Who Borne the Battle” campaign boldly targeted the Department of Veterans Affairs’ gender exclusive motto and put the needs of women veterans on the map  – and in the headlines. Jaslow also oversaw the organization’s successful campaigns to block over $4 billion in cuts to veteran education benefits, and to reverse the Defense Department’s efforts to claw back bonuses paid to California National Guardsman. Jaslow was instrumental in orchestrating the first-ever “Commander in Chief Forum” in partnership with NBC, ensuring issues important to the military community remained front and center during the 2016 presidential campaign. The forum drew over 15 million viewers.
Professional background: Prior to joining IAVA, Jaslow built a reputation as a leader, trusted advisor and innovative political strategist in Washington and on campaigns across the country. She served as Chief of Staff to Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, after leading Bustos’ successful campaign to unseat an incumbent Member of Congress in what has since become a bellwether region for the success of both political parties. Jaslow also served as a communications aide in the White House, as Press Secretary for former Virginia Senator and decorated Vietnam veteran Jim Webb and in leadership roles for various other Members of Congress.
Jaslow has twice testified before Congress and made appearances on national news programs including NBC’s Today Show, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show, and the CBS Evening News, where she speaks on issues ranging from national politics to our national security and the military-civilian divide. She has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN Opinion and Marie Claire in addition to other national publications. Ophira Eisenberg is a Canadian-born standup comedian and writer. She hosted NPR’s nationally syndicated comedy trivia show Ask Me Another (airing on 400+ stations) where she interviewed, joked, and played silly games with some of the biggest and funniest folks in the world. 


Lauded as “hilarious, high risk, and an inspiration,” Ophira filmed her comedy special Inside Joke, when she was 8½ months pregnant. The show’s material revolves around how she told everyone that she was never going to have kids, and then unexpectedly found herself expecting at “an advanced maternal age.” Inside Joke can be found on Amazon and iTunes, along with her two other comedy albums, Bangs!and As Is.
She has appeared on Comedy Central, This Week at The Comedy Cellar, Kevin Hart’s LOL Network, HBO’s Girls, Gotham Live, The Late Late Show, The Today Show, and VH-1. The New York Times called her a skilled comedian and storyteller with “bleakly stylish” humor. She was also selected as one of New York Magazine’s “Top 10 Comics that Funny People Find Funny,” and hailed by Forbes.com as one of the most engaging comics working today.
Ophira is a regular host and teller with The Moth and her stories have been featured on The Moth Radio Hour and in two of The Moth’s best-selling books, including the most recent New York Times Bestseller Occasional Magic: True Stories About Defying the Impossible.
Ophira’s first book, Screw Everyone: Sleeping My Way to Monogamyi s a comedic memoir about her experiments in the field as a single woman, traveling from futon to futon and flask-to-flask, gathering data, hoping to put it all together and build her own perfect mate.
She is also sought after as a brilliant interviewer and moderator, and has interviewed dozens of celebrities, writers, and actors.
Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Ophira graduated with a Cultural Anthropology and Theater degree from McGill University. She now lives in Brooklyn, NY where she is a fixture at New York City’s comedy clubs

Eric J. Segall graduated from Emory University, Phi Beta Kappa 27  and summa cum laude, and from Vanderbilt Law School, where he was the research editor for the Law Review and member of Order of the Coif. He clerked for the Chief Judge Charles Moye Jr. for the Northern District of Georgia, and Albert J. Henderson of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. After his clerkships, Segall worked for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and the U.S. Department of Justice, before joining the Georgia State faculty in 1991.
 

Segall teaches federal courts and constitutional law I and II. He is the author of the books Originalism as Faith and Supreme Myths: Why the Supreme Court is not a Court and its Justices are not Judges. His articles on constitutional law have appeared in, among others, the Harvard Law Review Forum, the Stanford Law Review On Line, the UCLA Law Review, the George Washington Law Review, the Washington University Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law, the Northwestern University Law Review Colloquy, and Constitutional Commentary among many others.
 

Segall’s op-eds and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the LA Times, The Atlantic, SLATE, Vox, Salon, and the Daily Beast, among others. He has appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and France 24 and all four of Atlanta’s local television stations. He has also appeared on numerous local and national radio shows.

Prior to coming to NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Caplan was the Sidney D. Caplan Professor of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, where he created the Center for Bioethics and the Department of Medical Ethics.
