Return to Bucha: how a community rebuilds after a massacre

Return to Bucha: how a community rebuilds after a massacre

This episode is available now to Telegraph subscribers and will be available to everyone on the 17th July.

In the first of The Telegraph's special podcasts on the war in Ukraine. Presenter David Knowles and Producer Adélie Pojzman-Pontay travel to Bucha and Hostomel, north of Kyiv, to hear the stories of citizens who survived Russia's brutal occupation in Spring 2022.

In Hostomel they meet Roman, a young Ukrainian man who fled his new apartment as Russian forces advanced. When he returned after the liberation he discovered the disgusting ways the occupying troops had treated his home.

Then, they travel to Bucha to see an old friend, Ihor Savchenko. Two years on from the occupation of Bucha, Ihor is helping his community piece their lives back together even though the war threatens to engulf him once again.

We first met Ihor's daughter Katya in 2022 - listen to that episode here: https://shows.acast.com/ukraine-the-latest/episodes/658301371b4a0600176a40ee

Profound Statement

"You can't silence a free person, all you can do is kill them!" is the most profound thing I have heard during this special military shambles to date. Glad to hear you've removed the opportunistic schtick from the preternaturally untruthful bloviated Churchill wannabe former UK PM. Now I can listen daily from start to finish what is undeniably a well balanced, highly informative fact based pod.

2024-06: As to the morality of civilians dying in Russian occupied Ukraine or in Russia proper, unless known political or military collaborators with the occupying forces, it is best they are not targeted. However, if they are victims of collateral damage, such as from Russia downing incoming missiles aimed at military targets, then their death is regrettable but morally excusable.

My number one source of information

I am Ukrainian living and listening in Switzerland. I’ve been monitoring all the news since the very first day of the war on all existing sources- tv news (all major broadcasters), internet, magazines and in all languages: English, Ukrainian, Russian and German. Ever so often I felt disappointed if not out right outraged by different media and their incorrect presentation of crucial facts about the war. Ukraine the latest though really stands out. This podcast provides me with in depth analysis and details that are so important, it also brings great guests and experts from all over the world, as well as Ukrainians who can talk knowledgeably on a very fluid and quickly changing situation. The podcast is informative and looks at the war from many different angles and view points. Since I’ve discovered the podcast, it has become my number one source of information! Keep up the GREAT work you are doing! For me war in Ukraine is not just an interesting topic, it’s the matter of absolute significance and correct, timely information shared with the great deal of understanding and consideration, helps me stay strong and hopeful! Thank you!
