When music meets technology, things can get a little wild. Join host Caro C as she chats to two artists who are using recent advances in software and kit to take audio into previously unheard dimensions.
Vicky Clarke is training machine learning algorithms on the sounds of broken glass and industrial buildings to craft her own AI musique concrète, creating sounds and potential instruments that exist beyond the physics of our world. Meanwhile, Jung In Jung is using the Oculus Quest headset and her sound design skills to create a virtual reality space where musicians can find new ways to improvise.

Vicky Clarke is a Manchester-based sound and electronic media artist who works with sound sculpture, DIY electronic and human-machine systems. A winner of the 2020 Oram Awards, she is currently artist in residence with NOVARS, University of Manchester, and premiered Aura Machine, her first piece created using neural synthesis in June 2021. Her previous projects include working with researchers at the National Graphene Institute to develop a conductive graphene Ableton interface and co-founding Noise Orchestra.vickyclarke.org
Jung In Jung is a South Korean sound artist and postdoctoral researcher at Dundee’s InGAME centre. Her work uses hacked game controllers, virtual reality hardware and games software to explore the intimate relationships between sound, movement and space. Her recent project Sound Of Light offers players the chance to improvise and communicate through hand gestures in a VR environment, while her previous work has combined interactive technology with dance performance.junginjung.com

Emma Butt is a TV & film dubbing mixer, ADR recordist and sound editor whose credits include Game Of Thrones, Sex Education, Doctor Who and EastEnders. But once you get to grips with them, they can be absorbing, endlessly adaptable…and perhaps a little addictive.

In this episode, we’re slowing down, taking a moment to listen and talking about sound art. What is it, where might you find it and is it purely about sound or more about a state of mind?
Host Caro C is joined by two artists working with sound, Ryoko Akama and Amy Beeston. Ryoko is a Japanese-Korean artist and composer living in Huddersfield, who uses everyday items to create kinetic installations that are often driven invisibly by heat, magnetism or gravity. Amy is a Scottish sound artist and audio researcher living in Orkney, whose work explores nature and the environment in her island home. Together, they reflect upon an area of sonic creativity that starts with the world around you, and offer advice for tuning in to your own inner sound artist.
 
Ryoko Akama is a Japanese-Korean sound artist, musician and composer living in Huddersfield. She uses everyday items and pieces of scrap to create kinetic sculptures and installations, often driven invisibly by heat, magnetism or gravity and using an ‘almost nothing’ aesthetic to emphasise silence, time and space. She is artistic director of the arts organisation ame, which hosts roam festival from 9-18 September 2021. Amy Beeston is a Scottish sound artist and audio researcher whose work explores aspects of nature and the environment in her home on the Orkney Islands. Her background combines sound art and science, with studies in music technology, sonology and machine listening. She co-founded Yorkshire Sound Women Network as well as the collective SONA, who have created and exhibited sound art together, including a soundscape made from and for a Sheffield cutlery factory. Does your love of music go further than listening to or making it? Host Caro C is joined by two guests who had an idea and didn’t wait for someone else to do it for them. Sophie Cooper has been putting on DIY gigs where she lives for nearly 20 years, while Liina Turtonen set up her own YouTube channel to explain music technology and now has more than 20,000 subscribers. Together, they share what they’ve learned along the way: not only the dos and don’ts of booking acts (clue: remember the PA system!) or cracking the secrets of YouTube’s algorithms, but wider lessons about finding confidence, staying authentic and remembering why you’re doing it in the first place.
Sophie Cooper is a Todmorden-based musician and sound artist who records and performs both solo and in collaborations including Delphine Dora, Julian Bradley (as The Slowest Lift) and Kelly Jayne Jones. Liina ‘LNA’ Turtonen is a musician and producer living in York but originally from Naantali, Finland. She started the YouTube channel LNA Does Audio Stuff in 2019 in response to the lack of woman-led music tech channels and posts weekly with a mix of tutorials, gear reviews and fun production challenges.
