The Beyond the Pearls podcast, based on the Morning Report series from Elsevier, has been adapted for audio in collaboration with series editor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, InsideTheBoards, and the volume editors of the Morning Report series’ five volumes covering Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery.
Like the books in the series, the podcast uses an in-depth case dissection format and aims to deliver practical, concise and easy to digest information that is especially relevant for those studying for the USMLE Step 3, but students or others revising other USMLE or COMLEX exams will also find value.
Most episodes present a high-yield topic in a morning report or grand rounds format, and include must-know "pearls," an in-depth discussion of differentials and treatment, and assessment questions that support exam preparation. The Beyond the Pearls podcast also offers bonus episodes based on some of Dr. Raj’s most popular, highly-rated lectures.

Alexandra reviews chapter 9 from the Psychiatry Morning Report book.
A 25-year-old female presents to the outpatient psychiatry office for emetophobia (a fear of vomiting). She reports her symptoms have been going on for “as long as I can remember.” She describes that even thinking about vomiting will make her feel nauseated. She avoids food for days at a time to have an empty stomach to circumvent throwing up. She constantly washes her hands in an effort to avoid germs that could potentially lead to emesis from a gastrointestinal illness. She reports that these symptoms control her life.

    PSYCHIATRY: Defense Mechanisms

    Today's Episode
Alexandra reviews chapter 2 from the Psychiatry Morning Report book. A 34-year-old male with a history of hypertension and anxiety presents to the emergency department (ED) accompanied by his wife. He complains of abdominal pain from an injury to the right upper quadrant of his abdomen secondary to a pellet gunshot. He is tachycardic but otherwise hemodynamically stable. The ED physician is suspicious that this may have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man smells of alcohol and does not provide much information about how the injury happened. Routine laboratory tests are ordered, and a psychiatry consult is placed.
