Grief is not a life sentence with Megan Hillukka #EP21
Megan Hillukka is a bereaved mother, with 6 children, 5 who are still here. Megan encourages and supports grieving mothers that though the worst thing has happened to them, their life is not over. She also experienced PTSD from finding her daughter Aria when she died, and has done the work to find healing in her brain and her life. From this, Megan wants everyone to know that PTSD is not a life sentence, and that healing is possible. Through her experience of the death of her daughter Aria, Megan has learned tools and ways of shifting grief so that it can become just a little bit lighter, and easier to live with. She helps her clients carry their grief instead of suffer with grief.
We cover the following topics:
- Grieving a child
- Impact of grief on your role as a Mother
- How grief isn't a life sentence
- Living with PTSD and trauma
- Helping others who are grieving
and so much more!

Grieving my Dad who is still alive with Emilly Barrow #EP20
Emilly's grief journey started six years ago when her Dad had a stroke and brain aneurism in July 2014. Similar to most people who experience grief, it was the result of losing a loved one but the punch line here is... he is still alive. Emilly is grateful everyday that her father survived his accident, but the parts that made him "him" did not. Her Dad is now mentally and physically disabled; battling everyday with PTSD, dementia, depression and chronic anxiety. Disassociated from reality. For her family, Emilly's father died in July 2014 but he also is alive.
The very definition of grief is "intense sorrow, especially caused by someone's death." Emilly's unique situation has found herself & her family challenging the idea of death entirely and the societal perception of it.
In this conversation we chat about:
- Disenfranchised grief and how it impacts you
- Grieving a person who is still here
- Gaining a new perspective
- Not letting it define you
- Mental disabilities
- Framing pain with humour
and so much more!
If you, or anyone you care for is in need of support, please reach out to your local support line or if you are in Australia, you can contact Griefline by phone on 1300 845745 who are available from midday to 3am everyday.
