#244 How Immunity is influenced by the Mind with Dr Monty Lyman

#244 How Immunity is influenced by the Mind with Dr Monty Lyman

For most of medical history, in the West at least, the idea that there could be a relationship between the mind and the immune system was inconceivable.
At medical school, I was taught that there is no relationship whatsoever between our mindset and our ability to stave off infections like viruses, colds and even reduce our susceptibility to cancer.
But that is now thought to be completely incorrect. In fact there is a clear relationship between our emotions, our microbes and our immune systems.
To talk about this with me today is Dr Monty Lyman. A medical doctor, researcher and author who specializes in the relationship between the mind and the immune system. He is an Academic Clinical Fellow at the University of Oxford and in todays podcast we talk about:

How irritable bowel relates to an ‘irritable mind’Gut Rehabilitation and what that entailsThe relationship between the mind, body and microbesWhy psychological stress causes inflammation in the bodyHow an anti-inflammatory lifestyle can heal both the mind and body by recalibrating an unbalanced defence system

Today’s snacksize Doctor’s Kitchen podcast is all about framing happiness so you can experience more positivity day to day.

#243 Spices to reduce Inflammation with Dr Rupy Aujla

#243 Spices to reduce Inflammation with Dr Rupy Aujla

A number of lifestyle related illnesses have uncontrolled inflammation at its core. Whether that’s obesity, heart disease or even dementia, inflammation appears to play a role.
I’ve done a free mini-series on inflammation that you can find on my newsletter, where I talk about the big drivers of inflammation (namely gut health, exercise, sleep and mindset) and we’ve done a number of episodes on inflammation on the podcast to determine what it is and why we’d all be better reducing it. And on todays podcast I wanted to zoom in on spices in particular.
These are by no means the only spices with inflammation reducing potential, but possibly the ones I used most commonly and are likely to have the biggest evidence base.
Ginger, Turmeric and Cinnamon are my go to and I get at least one of these spices in my diet daily.

#242 The Benefits of Olive Oil with Dr Simon Poole

#242 The Benefits of Olive Oil with Dr Simon Poole

Olive oil is a hot topic. We first dived into the benefits of olive oil back on episode 99 with Dr Simon, but I thought it was time for an update.
Today you’re going to learn about:
Why Olive oil is so healthy
The evidence for Olive oils benefits
How much Olive oil you should be consuming every day for benefits
How to choose a quality Olive oil
The minimum polyphenol content you need to look out for
    Whether “cold pressed” means anything
Cheap and fake olive oils and whether they have any value
Dr Simon Poole is in the studio and on YouTube you can watch our taste test with 5 different olive oils. He shows me the techniques behind how to smell, taste and grade olive oils and how you can do this at home too!
Dr Simon is an internationally acclaimed expert in the mediterranean diet and lifestyle, and the nutrition of extra virgin olive oil. He has more than 30 years experience as a medical doctor, he’s a teacher and researcher in Cambridge, widely published in academic journals, and is author of award winning books including The Olive Oil Diet, The Real Mediterranean Diet, Diabetes for Dummies and Diabetes Nutrition for Dummies.
We also taste test his own olive oil called “Positively Good For You” that isn’t available for purchase at present, but watch this space because considering the flavour, quality and price of the oil, I expect to see it on shelves soon.

McSmilla ,

Love it!

A very great podcast about the power of food and nutrition for our bodies, souls and overall well-being. Very divers range of guests and topics. Every single episode has left an impression on my mind and soul. I am usually listening to the doctor’s kitchen when I am going for a run. Creating this habit (or habit stacking for the pros 😉) has become a favorite pastime during the pandemic.
Rupy is an authentic, knowledgeable and charming host! Can’t beat this mix 😉

Terrible sound quality

I‘d so love to listen to the new episode, but the sound of your guest speaking is of such a bad quality that I can‘t keep listening, it‘s too enervating.
It‘s a shame because the topic is very interesting and she probably has a lot to say about it.
Could you please work on this technical problem? I know it keeps happening in more and more podcast interviews, when they are recorded via phone or videocall etc. But that‘s no excuse. The topics your podcast is about need focus while listening, so bad technical quality should not be so distracting that listeners just cannot concentrate on the content.
