Beginnings, Endings and the ADHD Brain

Beginnings, Endings and the ADHD Brain

The ADHD brain is uniquely wired, which makes it hard sometimes to know if what you experience is ADHD-related or not, especially if you are new on this journey.

Beginning something new is exciting, even more so if something of high interest. Your brain fires up and when boredom doesn’t get in the way, levels of attention, focus and concentration are high.

The shadow side of it is when something comes to an end. It’s daunting.

One thing is for sure with ADHD, it comes with a lot of paradoxes and beginnings can also bring its load of challenges when you have no idea where to start, how long it’s going to take and what the different steps are going to be..

In this episode, Zarina helps you understand what executive function comes into play in the ADHD brain with beginnings and endings, why emotions collide and how tuning in to what’s going on inside impacts how ADHD challenges manifest.

She also shares a great exercise to help you find your transitioning pattern.

How to Express Yourself Clearly When You Have ADHD

How to Express Yourself Clearly When You Have ADHD

How does lack of clarity show up when you have ADHD and what are the impacts in the personal, professional and love life of folks with a uniquely wired brain?

This episode is inspired by a challenge Zarina experiences and that's  the inability to express feelings, thoughts, emotions. ideas and needs, so that they are understood.

Because everything is going fast in the ADHD brain, with information and thoughts travelling at the speed of light, it's a real struggle to select them, put them in a proper order so that the person at the receiving end gets it...unless it's a conversation among ADHDers because we usually have little or no problem tend to understanding one another.

Needless to say, lack of clarity comes with its load of consequences, from arguments with your significant other to hindering professional advancement, it is a contributing factor of separation or job termination.

If lack of clarity is something you are experiencing, this episode sheds a light on what happens in the ADHD brain that makes it difficult to express yourself clearly. It also gives you a better understanding of how your brain works and become even more aware of when lack of clarity shows up.

Perfectionism: How It Shows Up With ADHD and It's Hidden Strengths

Perfectionism: How It Shows Up With ADHD and It's Hidden Strengths

Believing there is only one way of doing something and no other option possible to do certain tasks or chores such as folding laundry or reading a book. Thinking that you might as well do it yourself because you will have to re-do it anyway. Having to feel 100% ready before being able to take action for a new project or challenge you're passionate about.

Any of this sound familiar? As many of the challenges ADHD comes with, perfectionism shows up differently for us and it really helps to understand how it manifests to really give ourselves the chance to avoid falling in the trap.

    Why?

Because from an ADHD perspective, trying to do something and expecting it to be perfect will only result in intensifying your ADHD challenges. Task initiation is an example and when it is extremely difficult for you to get in action, what do you end up doing? Procrastinating.

As a recovering perfectionist, I now see how it was exhausting to always aim for perfection. It was also one of the factors that led me to burnout.

In this episode, we look at the impacts of perfectionism, how it shows up, what you can do to not fall in this thinking trap, but most importantly, the strengths that hide behind it. Yes, believe it or not, there are quite a few of those actually.

A Fraught Relationship Between a Mother and a Daughter Who Don't Know Have ADHD

A Fraught Relationship Between a Mother and a Daughter Who Don't Know Have ADHD

Do you have a fraught relationship with your mom with your fair share of arguments, conflicts, misunderstandings, fights, and the chain reaction of negative emotions and trauma?

Zarina sure has, and for the longest time, she wished her mother would change and be what she wanted her to be instead of accepting her as she was.

At 18 years old, she felt that the only way to break free from her complicated and conflictual relationship with her mother was to move 5000 kilometers away from home.

From the teenager who talked back, was disrespectful and hurtful to the woman who eventually realized that improving her relationship with her mom was only possible if she allowed herself to heal the traumas she experienced as a child, it has been quite the journey.

Learning they both had ADHD explained a lot about the tumultuous and fraught relationship they had for decades.

She thought that sharing what her relationship with her mother has been would serve other women with ADHD looking to mend the heart of the wounded little girl they once were.

Words have the power to heal, Zarina believes it deep within her soul and if you are a daughter seeking answers and understanding and it's no coïncidence that she chose Mothers Day to release this episode.

By allowing herself to be vulnerable and share her story, she hopes it will serve women with ADHD who wish to heal their mother-daughter relationship, or at least, feel less guilty and shameful, like she once did.
