Alcohol’s Negative Impact on Sleep and Gut Health with Dr. Harold Minkowitz

Alcohol’s Negative Impact on Sleep and Gut Health with Dr. Harold Minkowitz

Does drinking alcohol affect your sleep? Can alcohol cause inflammation in the gut and lead to an unhealthy gut microbiome? How can I increase longevity and wellbeing in my life? If you find yourself asking any of these questions, we’ve got the expert on how to live your healthiest life possible - and it all comes down to four basic principles: sleep, diet, exercise, and community.
Dr. Harold Minkowitz, a board-certified anesthesiologist who has devoted a large component of his professional career to Clinical Research, which he began during his residency. With his focus predominantly on investigating novel therapies to control pain, Dr Minkowitz has also held a number of academic positions within the University of Texas where he has also authored medical book chapters, has been involved in about 300 clinical trials, has authored about 200 peer-reviewed papers and abstracts, and has lectured extensively nationally and internationally.
Currently, Dr. Minkowitz is working as a full-time clinical researcher, evaluating new therapies in pain management, as well as new drugs to be used in the operating room. His interest in longevity began about ten years ago when he started feeling sluggish, out of shape and overweight and he realized there had to be a better way to live his life – thus began his research into longevity, health and diet.

Mother’s Day Special: 5 Redemptive Stories of Motherhood in Recovery

Mother’s Day Special: 5 Redemptive Stories of Motherhood in Recovery

In this special Mother's Day episode, Julie DeNofa highlights five fantastic women who have walked through recovery and how motherhood, whether being a mom themselves or how their mother loved them through addiction, has shaped who they are today. Each woman has their own unique and powerful story and we are honored to share their inspiring stories of courage, redemption, forgiveness, and renewal.
At Positive Recovery Centers, we want to celebrate every mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and maternal figure for their constant nurturing care, unconditional love, and tenacious spirit - the ongoing gifts that empower future generations.

Additionally, and with much love, we also want to pause to remember the mothers who are no longer physically with us. Their absence leaves an indelible mark on our hearts, and while we celebrate the joy of motherhood, we also recognize the ache of loss.
To every mother out there, whether you are in the midst of recovery, have navigated past challenges, or have supported someone through their struggles, know that your role is pivotal. With all its trials and triumphs, being a mother has the unique power to transform not only our children but also our own lives.
    Topics Discussed:
Releasing shame in addiction to pursue redemption in recovery
Learning to parent teens through leading by example
The greatest joys of motherhood and learning how to be present
What it means to be a woman and mother in active recovery
Building stronger relationships with your children and spouse through sobriety

Empower Your Mind: Helpful Practices for Mental Health Awareness

Empower Your Mind: Helpful Practices for Mental Health Awareness

Did you know mindfulness and meditation are helpful practices that empower your mind? In this episode, Host Dr. Jason Powers shares that about 80% of individuals he sees being treated for substance use disorders also struggle with a co-occurring mental illness as well. However, there is nothing to feel ashamed of. Many of us struggle with mental illness in some capacity, such as anxiety, depression, or a variety of other mental illnesses.
Since mental illness and substance use disorder are so closely related, Dr. Powers shares that "if you're not treating addiction and mental illness, you're not treating either." The truth is, when helping individuals with the underlying reasons behind substance use, we have a significantly higher chance of assisting them to fully recover.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month (and beyond), we want to destigmatize mental illness and addiction. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, we are here to help! Please call us at 877-697-1383 to speak with a substance use professional today!
    Topics Discussed:
Why treating mental illness and substance use disorder go hand-in-hand
The many brain health benefits of meditation practices
Learning to practice mindfulness BEFORE an anxiety attack
Integrating healthy coping skills to empower your mind
Recognizing mental illness from an objective and non-judgement standpoint
