Did you know you can screen for Breast Cancer using saliva!
1 in 7 women in Victoria will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but as we know here at JOY, breast screening isn’t just for cis women, and while necessary to screen for cancers, it’s not exactly a comfortable experience.
The sooner cancer is found, the more successful treatment is likely to be, however many people put it off – but what if screening for cancer in the breast tissue could be done another way – with saliva (spit)!
Cat joins Rach & Dean monthly queer science segment as we find out what spit’s got to do with breast screening.
And we encourage everyone to get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts, so if you notice any changes you can talk to your doctor about them, and if you want to know more about breast screening, head to www.breastscreen.org.au -

Queer Refugees supporting one another – Third Queer Culture
For some, connecting to your community can be difficult at the best of times, but when you add on an extra layer of being new to the country, or even having to leave the home you were born in and settle anew, finding your queer community can be even tougher.
Third Queer Culture in Brisbane was formed in 2021 with just five members and has grown to become and independent peer support and advocacy group for LGBTQIA+ refugees.
Miguel, who came to Australia from Columbia, spoke with Dean about his experience with the organisation and how it has changed his life in Australia.
If you are in Brisbane and looking for or know someone who could use the community and support Third Queer Culture have created, you can get in touch with the group by e-mailing thirdqueerculture@gmail.com.
