    United Kingdom: Silenced Survivors

    United Kingdom: Silenced Survivors

The #MeToo movement brought a much-needed spotlight to sexual violence, but less of that light has been shone on the male victims of rape and sexual assault. It is estimated that in the UK that annually 12,000 men are raped and 76,000 are sexually abused, whilst research from the USA found 1 in 6 men were likely to be victims of sexual assault. However, there was no research on its impacts within the LGBTIQA community.

SurvivorsUK is a UK based charity that provides specialist support to cis and trans men, boys, and non-binary people who have been raped, sexually assaulted or abused. The charity has recently conducted ground-breaking research looking into gay and bisexual men’s experiences of sexual violence in the UK. Tonight, we are joined by Meka Beresford and Sam Thomson from SurvivorsUK, who are co-authors of the report into the findings of that research.

United Kingdom: What Does Pride Mean Today?

United Kingdom: What Does Pride Mean Today?

Pride has always been about visibility. Whether it is to raise visibility in places where LGBT people are hidden or to celebrate the community to what it has become today, Pride is a global movement. In most cases Pride events were born out of protest. In some places it is now more of a party.

But at what point does profit become more important than Pride? There is a global counter-movement to “reclaim pride” from the commercial interests and bring it back to its grass-roots protest origins. And Manchester is the latest city where there is division over what Pride means today. John Proctor, organised a protest march at Manchester Pride in the UK to make his point.

Afghanistan: Flee – The Story of a Child Refugee

Afghanistan: Flee – The Story of a Child Refugee

Afghanistan does not have a very good history when it comes to LGBTIQ rights. Same-sex sexual activity can bring prison and even death sentences for people having been found guilty. And although no such sentences have been applied after the end of the Taliban ruling of the country in early 2000s, the return of the Taliban leaves LGBTIQ people with little hope for their future in Afghanistan.

Previously under Taliban rule, many LGBTIQ people fled the country, very often using people smugglers to reach a safe place and seek asylum. One of these stories is now coming to cinemas.

Jonas Poher Rasmussen is a director and writer. His latest documentary, Flee, an animated documentary, recounts the story of Amin, a child refugee from Afghanistan to Denmark. Flee is the story of a young man grappling with his traumatic past in order to find his true self and the meaning of home.
