Sandman Stories Presents Dustin Steichmann

Today we are back in the book of Nigerian folklore written down by M.I. Ogumefu. In the first story, a wife gives away something she doesn’t know is invaluable. In the second story, a parrot cannot lie and causes its owners plenty of headaches. And in the third story, some nobles send societal exiles to the new capital in order to spook the king.

The language, Phonpeien, is part of the Australnesian languages which includes Hawaiian and Maori and Malagasy. And of course I would love to visit this island some day. Listener Shoutout: Bamako Mali. I’m still not sure how someone in the city found my podcast, but I’m glad that they listened to at least one episode. Bamako is the capital of the country of Mali, which is the legacy of the Malian empire. This city has seen the likes of Mansa Musa who traded salt for gold and then messed up the whole gold market when he went on hajj and flooded it with gold gifts. People have lived in the city since the paleolithic era. Of course it was also colonized by France during the ransacking of Africa by the European powers. It did make me smile when they dropped French from their official languages. And so today, I’ll be attempting the main language Bambara. To the listener in Bamako I say Aw ni ce and Aw ni su Thank you and goodnight
