When we decided to get a boat for the San Diego EMP meetup this year, there was a lot of talk about who should get to play it. A couple different ideas were floated, playlists discussed, corporate performance licenses went unpaid for, and so on. I ultimately gravitated towards the idea of Speakeasy Ray just soundtracking the whole fucking thing. If you've never heard any of his Tiki Tuesday shows, I can't recommend them enough. Not only is this well-groomed gentleman and scholar a superb selector and story teller of all manner of vinyl rarities and exotica, you might even catch a stray set of minimal house, vibey dnb/jungle, and who knows what else here and there. His deft, masterful versatility never comes at the expense of the vibe, only ever bolstering it further. Unfortunately, Ray couldn't join us that weekend himself. But when I asked him if he'd do us the honor of a two hour mix for the occasion, his response was enthusiastic and I got the recording back day of. Much as I'd hoped, this set was the perfect soundtrack for a hungover, Sunday morning victory lap around the San Diego harbor. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
