    Music For Life Episode 97 - University Orchestra, Fifth Annual Holiday Gala, Opera Scenes, Chamber Ensembles

    In this week's episode of Music for Life, Music from DePauw, our last before DePauw's Thanksgiving break... Orcenith Smith stops in to update us on a very special DePauw Orchestra tradition... Holiday Gala - 2014 with the chamber music class performances coming up, Eric Edberg comes by to talk about what that's going to involve... Hannah talks to some of her Opera Scenes classmates about their upcoming recital... and we talk to several of our ensemble directors about our Fifth Annual Holiday Gala, coming up in just a couple of weeks! From the Student Recital Hour of November 18, 2015, pianist Shiyu Su performs the first movement, Allegro moderato, from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Sonata for Piano no. 10 in C major, K. 330. From the Student Recital Hour of November 18, 2015, pianist Eric Heaton performs the first and fifth of Johannes Brahms' Sechs Klavierstucke, op. 118.

    Music For Life Episode 96 - Timothy McAllister, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble

    This week, on Music for Life, Music from DePauw... Timothy McAllister professor Steve Snyder and junior Drew Casey come in for a friendly chat about the next Jazz Ensemble concert... professor Bonnie Whiting comes in to tell me about what the Percussion Ensemble has planned for their performance this week... Hannah talks with seniors Catherine Anderson-Quinones and Lance Orta and junior Dallas Gray about their upcoming recitals... and sax professor Scotty Stepp tells us what to look forward to from Faculty Select Series guest Timothy McAllister this weekend! SOURCES From this week's Student Recital Hour, cellist Peter Lockman and pianist Tony Weinstein perform the first movement, Allegretto, from Dmitri Shostakovich's first cello concerto, op. 107.  Also from this week's recital hour, tenor saxophonist Spencer Schillerstrom and pianist Steve Snyder perform Schillerstrom's piece "Suspended" and Bill Evans' arrangement of Henry Mancini's "The Days of Wine and Roses."  From the Faculty Select Series concert of November 9th, 2015, guest fortepianist Leslie Tung performs Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonata op. 27, no. 2, the "Moonlight."

    Music For Life Episode 95 - Seymour Bernstein, Paré & Weinstein Recital, NATS

    This week, on Music for Life, Music from DePauw... Seymour Bernstein voice professor Caroline Smith talks to Dean McCoy about a vocal competition DePauw just finished hosting... Burke Stanton chats with professor Barbara Paré about an intriguing recital of settings of Emily Dickinson's poetry that she and Tony Weinstein are presenting this week... we present some terrific performances recently given on the stages of Thompson Recital Hall and Kresge Auditorium... and Dean McCoy talks with professor Kristina Boerger about a special guest this week, beloved New York-based piano pedagogue Seymour Bernstein, with whom we have a special DePauw connection! SOURCES From their concert of October 14, 2015, the DePauw Chamber Players (May Phang, piano; Tarn Travers, violin; and Eric Edberg, cello) present Maurice Ravel's A Minor Piano Trio. From their recital of October 27, 2015, the DePauw Faculty Woodwind Ensemble (flutist Anne Reynolds, oboist Leonid Sirotkin, clarinetist Randy Salman, bassoonist Kara Stolle, and horn professor Robert Danforth) perform the three movements of Gunther Schuller's Suite: Prelude, Blues, and Toccata.

    Music For Life Episode 94 - University Orchestra, Clubbing for Classical Musicians, Decoda

    In this week's episode of Music for Life, Music from DePauw... Ensemble-in Residence, Decoda Burke Stanton talks to first-year music major Jacqueline Robertson about the Shostakovich symphony the orchestra recently performed... 21CM director Mark Rabideau interviews classical musician author Sarah Robinson about her new book “Clubbing for Classical Musicians,” a must-read for any up-and-coming musician... we present some terrific performances from this past week... and I sit down with three members of Decoda, this year’s Ensemble-in-Residence, for a lively conversation about their innovative performances and collaborations in the changing world of classical music! SOURCES From their performance of September 20, 2015, the DePauw University Orchestra, under the direction of Orcenith Smith, performs the fourth movement, Allegro non troppo, from Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, op. 47. At this week’s recital hour, Decoda members violinist Anna Elashvili, violist Nathan Schram, and cellist Caitlin Sullivan performed the first movement, Adagio - Allegro con brio, from Ludwig van Beethoven’s op. 9, no. 1 string trio. From their performance of October 7th, the DePauw Jazz Ensemble, led by Steve Snyder, performs Frank Foster’s “Four, Five, Six.”

    Music For Life Episode 93 - Sweet Honey in the Rock, Jayme Stone, Elissa Harbert, University Choirs

    This week, on Music for Life... Sweet Honey in the Rock Hannah Gauthier talks to singers Dallas Gray and Marin Tack about the choirs’ recent performance of Benjamin Britten’s monumental “Rejoice in the Lamb...” we send music history professor Elissa Harbert on a tropical vacation with malfunctioning personal electronics... we chat with banjoist Jayme Stone about his visit and his innovative approach to keeping traditional music exciting and engaging... and choir director Kristina Boerger comes in to talk about our next Green Guest Artists, the phenomenal all-female vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock! SOURCES From their concert of September 27, 2015, Kristina Boerger directs soloists Addy Sterrett, Dana Hart, Lance Orta, and Logan Dell’Acqua, organist Carla Edwards, and the DePauw University Choirs as they perform Benjamin Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb.”  From the Student Recital Hour of September 30, 2015, pianist Emily Chen performs Frederic Chopin’s Nocturne in C-Minor, op. 48, no. 1.

Jayme Stone and the Lomax Project Matt Champagne chats with Eric Edberg about his and May Phang’s recent performance of Albert Schnittke’s second cello sonata...   with our fall musical right around the corner, Hannah Gauthier has a special audience with His Royal Highness Arthur, King of the Britons and his assistant, Patsy...   we share some performances from the stages of Thompson Recital Hall and Kresge Auditorium...   and Burke Stanton talks to series director Professor Ron Dye about this week’s Performing Arts Series guests, Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project, a group which brings together terrific roots musicians to revive, recycle and re-imagine traditional American music!     Music For Life Episode 91 - Elissa Harbert, Brooke Addison, Study Abroad, Music on the Square

    This week, on Music for Life, Music from DePauw... Elissa Harbert we meet musicology professor Elissa Harbert and 21CM intern Brooke Addison... he’s been here for less than a month, but so what — we’re stranding professor Thomas King on a desert island with a defective iPod... Hannah learns about the summer abroad that Dana Hart and Annie Chase had, and Rachel talks to Burke Stanton about his semester abroad... and we bring you some great performances that DePauw students, faculty, and guests presented this week, including from the inaugural performance at Music on the Square! SOURCES Elena Escudero and pianist Tony Weinstein perform Libby Larsen’s “Bucking Bronco” at this past Wednesday’s Student Recital Hour. Our first Green Guest Artists of the year, Boston-based string chamber orchestra A Far Cry, presented a concert on September 11th. Here they play the third movement of Philip Glass’s third symphony. Wednesday, September 16 saw the first performance at DePauw’s new Music on the Square. Drummer Jason Tiemann, guitarist David Stryker, and DePauw professor Steve Snyder on organ play Horace Silver’s “Nica’s Dream.” Soprano Shannon Barry and pianist Amanda Hopson perform Richard Strauss’s “Sehnsucht” at this past Wednesday’s Student Recital Hour. Prof. King’s 5 Minute iPod segment included music from the following CDs: Die Zauberflöte Highlights/Berlin Philharmonic/Karl Böhm: Deutsche Grammophon 429825-2; Mahler Symphony no. 5/Chicago Symphony/Georg Solti: London 433329-2; Saint-Saëns Symphony no. 3/Boston Symphony/Charles Munch: BMG Classics 09026-61500-2

    Music For Life Episode 90 - A Far Cry, Jennings/Hopson Recital, Jennie Smith, Thomas King

    In this week's episode of Music for Life, Music from DePauw... A Far Cry we hear from two more students about their summer doings; this time, working with young musicians... two more new faculty members drop by to introduce themselves: singer Thomas King and music theorist Jennie Smith... Hannah talks to Kerry Jennings and Amanda Hopson about their Schubert recital... and we have a lively chat with members of our first Green Guest Artists of the year, Boston-based and Grammy-nominated chamber ensemble A Far Cry, whom I fuss at for being conductorless! SOURCES From their CD “Dreams and Prayers,” A Far Cry performs the third movement, “Teneramente,” from Osvaldo Golijov’s composition “The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind.”  From our Faculty Select Series concert of September 10th, 2015, saxophonist Paul Bro, cellist Kurt Fowler, and pianist Martha Krasnican perform David Maslanka’s piece “Out of This World.”
