    Living your values matters especially when it’s hard. I was recently reminded of that fact.

    I recently had to decide how serious I was about living the values I say I believe in. Our values don't really mean much until it is hard to live them. It's in these times that we find out how serious we are about what we believe. But, even when it's hard--especially when it's hard--by living our values we find freedom and self-actualization.     Avoiding content that demeans and degrades: building lasting relationships and friendships.

    I worry a lot about the content that your generations are exposed to. There is so much contempt and criticism about men and women--you can find both, often from people who have had very little life experience. Or, from people who have real and traumatic experiences, but then make vast generalizations. My wife and I will soon have married for 32 years and I've learned a lot in that time. I've also learned a lot by working with and knowing a lot of women and a lot of men. People can't easily be generalized about. I worry that absorbing too much of this will make it harder for you to have happy, fulfilling relationships, whether romantic or friendship, with anyone who is much different than you. It's just my own thing, but I do think being more intentional about the spaces where we talk about and ingest political stuff is a generally healthy thing to do for our minds, souls, and honestly, our democracy.     A somewhat vulnerable story about how I learned that when you feel important things aren’t being done or said, it may be your cue to step up and be what and who you feel is missing, even when you don’t feel like you’re very good at it! Even imperfect efforts may end up changing things for the better for someone else, and also, almost surely, for yourself! And that is a great way to be happy!     Life is hard! It just takes a long time to get life together and to learn how to do it well. In fact, it takes a lifetime! If you’re not quite where you want to be or where you think you should be, first of all, I suspect you’re doing better than you think.     Why I think a new day or new week is more important than a new year.

    I’ve never been a big New Year’s resolutions person and I don’t find a year to be very helpful marker of time for self-improvement. But I do find that I’m happier when I try to be better and keep growing. For me, though, a week and even a day, works far better as the period of time I’m using to frame my growth.
