2/18 John Major's rail privatisation helmsman torpedoes Conservatives' latest reforms

Christian speaks at length with Steve Norris, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the UK Department for Transport between 1992 and 1996, who was the key Rail Minister serving John Major's Conservative Government in delivering the privatisation of Great Britain's railways and the creation of new industry structures.  While reflecting on the passenger growth which followed the 1993 Railways Act as well as candidly examining the shortcomings which emerged, Steve has much to say about flaws in the rail reform programme being promoted by today's Conservative Government, plus some pointed questions for Labour's alternative [2:30].  With the Labour Party having just published proposals for bus reform across England, Christian looks at what this could mean for cities and regions aspiring to enjoy bus networks more like those taken for granted in London [31:48].

Excellent addition

Brilliant quirky podcast. I’ve read a few of Christian’s books on trains and so it’s great to hear his views and knowledge on other transport forms and policy.

Rails & more

Great transport coverage. Strong on rail especially. On the button on news, and displaying the presenters’ deep knowledge of the subject.

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in UK transport. Linked to topics in the news and taking deep dives into the topics covered. Interesting interviews with a wide range of experts and rainmakers (or should that be leaf-clearers), whether that is on the ground with HS2 builders or getting under the bonnet of aviation fuel. Wolmar’s strong journalistic background gives the show its shape, and the deep knowledge of his Co-host shows increasingly as he gains confidence, making this a fine double act.

Good production too, so you can listen to it clearly while you are on the move.

Essential Listening

When I first gave this podcast a go I didn’t really think of myself as having enough interest in transportation to merit a regular listening habit- how wrong i was! This is so interesting and relevant to my traveling life. Very well constructed with insightful articles. Just listen.
