Frank Brormann is an entrepreneur with a fabulous heritage career in hairdressing. He is a German salon-owner and stylist who has a broad experience of working in different European countries, and trained with the likes of Patrick Cameron. Despite his fabulous start and quick success in the industry, Frank always felt there was ‘more to discover'. And indeed he was right!
Always driven and ambitious, Frank's quest for ‘more has led him to discover a new way of cutting hair. The Calligraphy Cut. He talks to the host of the Respectfully podcast, Nicky Pope, to explain Calligraphy Cut – both a technique and a hair tool in the form of a Calligraphy pen. 
Frank BrormanCalligraphy CutDuring the conversation, Frank shares both how he conceived the Calligraphy Pen, and how it is used to best effect. This is essentially a simple idea: emulating the way florist trim the stems of flowers by cutting them on a slant so there is a larger surface area of the cut stem to absorb water. But the effects on the hair are striking and impactful. A slant cut gives more scope to absorb moisture, but also adds to the reflective surface for light and shine, and to the flexibility of the hair strand and thus the way hair falls.

NIcky Clarke and NIcky Pope record RespectfullyNicky Clarke is arguably the most famous hairdresser in the UK today. He began his hairdressing career in the 70s, as a teenager, working for the House of Leonard where he met John Frieda. This was to prove a central part of Nicky's history. He and John went on to set up a salon of their own on the Marylebone Rd, where for more than a decade they nurtured a truly celebrity clientele. From Vogue shoots to creating the Purdey cut for Joanna Lumley, they did it all.
At home with Nicky ClarkeThe Nicky Clarke brandBy 1991 Nicky set up his own salon which flourished alongside his personal appearances on pretty much every TV show you can mention from Absolutely Fabulous to The Weakest Link, Come Dine with Me and Ant & Decs Saturday Night Takeaway. He even had royalty attend the salon opening to cut the ribbon. The tabloids went nuts for Nicky, and his personal life featured in the likes of Hello! Magazine as much as his hairdressing did. In 2008 he was awarded an OBE for services to hairdressing… but rather than hear from us, we invite you to settled into conversation recorded with Nicky in his gorgeous north London home. It’s quite a tale!

We know Liz McKeon as a salon business expert and founder of The International Salon Business School. But more recently Liz has taken on another role as ambassador for Shear Haven, provider of anti-domestic violence training for hairdressers. Liz joined Respectfully podcast host Nicky Pope to explain why this cause is dear to her heart, and how hairdressers can help.
[Trigger warning: the conversation does reference experience of violence suffered in a moderate way].
The proposition from Shear Haven is for salons and their teams to complete a free, online course in anti-domestic violence training. Just 20 minutes gives an insight into what might be the signs of someone being suffering from domestic abuse in some way. This is not about training to provide answers, but rather to spot the signs, initiate a conversation and perhaps enable someone to feel they can ask for help. It's invaluable.
Nicky Pope with Liz McKeon What's the problem? Stats taken from sources including Office for National Statistics and the National Centre for Domestic Violence, put the figures as being 1 in 5 adults experiencing domestic abuse in their lifetime. This equates to 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 6 or 7 men. This is staggering. To put into perspective, it makes it extremely likely that a client or a team member in the salon has or will at some point be a victim. They may feel unable to speak, to be practiced at concealing signs, but you can help.  Often the victim is made to feel they are the problem. If nobody asks the question ‘are you okay?', then perhaps they don't feel able to speak up. How about if you could ask that question.
