'It's not the time for one-way bets'

The start to 2022 was a rocky one for equities, with the MSCI World index losing 14 per cent year to date.
While recent weeks have provided some respite for equities, with most markets rebounding to some extent, continued high inflation and rising interest rates mean equity investors could continue to experience something of a rollercoaster ride, with markets struggling to price in the changing economic circumstances.
This week FTAdviser contributing editor David Thorpe is joined by James Thomson, manager of the Rathbone Global Opportunities fund, John Moore, senior investment manager at Brewin Dolphin, and Jason Borbora-Sheen, manager of the Ninety One Diversified Income fund.
They discuss whether equity prices are pricing in the range of macro-economic outcomes, whether sectors such as tech have fallen as far as they can and the challenges of finding defensive stocks.
The FTAdviser Podcast is the podcast for financial advisers, brought to you by FTAdviser. Each week, FTAdviser is joined by guests from the industry to discuss the week in news and pressing industry issues.

'Mortgage lenders don't want our business'

'Mortgage lenders don't want our business'

Mortgage lenders cannot cope with the volume of business coming their way, advisers have told the latest FTAdviser Podcast. Speaking to senior editor Simoney Kyriakou, Jane King, chartered adviser for Ash Ridge Financial Services, said lenders had told her they were swamped, partly due to the difficulties of navigating hybrid working but also because of having to cope with ever-changing bank base rate rises. Also joining her on the podcast was Almas Uddin, founder of Revolution Brokers, who warned of a "massive mortgage slowdown", while Rachel Springall, financial expert at Moneyfacts, said the ever-rising base rate meant the cost of mortgage repayments was rising faster than many people might expect.

What effect will the new mortgage affordability rules have?

What effect will the new mortgage affordability rules have?

This week the Bank of England has scrapped a key affordability test for borrowers wanting to take out a mortgage which was introduced following the 2008 financial crisis.
Since Monday, lenders no longer have to assess whether borrowers will be able to afford a mortgage if interest rates increased by 3 per cent because the Bank claimed it was no longer necessary and was actively preventing people from getting a mortgage.
This week FTAdviser deputy editor Damian Fantato is joined by Jeremy Duncombe, managing director of Accord Mortgages, and Danny Belton, head of lender relationships at Legal & General Mortgage Club, to discuss what impact this might have.
They discuss the criticism this decision has received that the Bank should have waited for the current macroeconomic turmoil to end, they weigh up what actions lenders might take and they discuss what sort of borrower might benefit from this change.

Advisers need support with complex divorce advice

Advisers need support with complex divorce advice

Unfortunately a gender pensions gap exists and men are more often than not better off in retirement then women, but divorce often plays a role in this as many do not take into account a partner’s pension.
When going through a divorce the court can make a pension sharing order to provide a transfer from a spouse with a greater pension provision to the one with the lesser. But many people do not know this exists. For example, a 2021 study looking at divorcees aged 55-64 found that men had an average total private pension fund value of £100,000, while women had accrued just £19,000.
On this week's edition of the FTAdviser Podcast, news editor Amy Austin is joined by Andrew Tully, technical director at Canada Life and Rachael Hall, co-founder & director of advice firm Seven Stages to talk about advising on divorce and the splitting of pension assets.

How will the growth of the DFM market affect advisers?

Over the past few years, the world of discretionary fund managing has grown and so has competition in this space.

But how can advisers make sure they’re entrusting the right people with their clients’ money, and what impact will the growth in DFMs have on advisers? Will the new entrants in the DFM market be able to challenge some of the bigger incumbents?
In this podcast, Sally Hickey, chief reporter at FTAdviser, is joined by Henry Cobbe, head of research of Elston Consulting, and Matt Ward, communications director at AKG to find out.

Audio Quality is terrible

Content of the podcast is good. Hard listen however as the audio quality is just terrible - echoes, feedback, different audio quality between individuals talking, people breathing down their own mics etc etc

makes it a hard listen.
