    057: The Currywurst

    057: The Currywurst

The Currywurst. Or perhaps “curry-ketchup sausages” are as common in Germany as perhaps hamburgers in the States. It’s a beloved snack, and an after-party savior. Currywurst has an interesting post-war history, and even started from an American GI influence in Berlin (or Hamburg)—yet never made it back to the US. Except when you buy Heinz Curryketschup in a German Delikatessen.

056: The Stone Bridge of Regensburg

056: The Stone Bridge of Regensburg

The stone bridge in Regensburg, built in 1135, has been through a lot. It's the oldest standing bridge in Germany and also spans some 300 meters. It's an heirloom of German history that even has its own lore around it. Swedes destroying one of its guard towers, Nazis blowing up a portion to stop American troops, medieval executions. Enough events and legends that it needed its own episode. Also, Regensburg is amazing.
The "podcard"--as the kids are calling it--came from Klaudia Zotzmann-Koch. Author and podcaster extraordinaire, resident of Vienna, but from an area we recently covered (Episode 51), she gives us more insight into the area.

055: Staufer (Hohenstaufen) I: Conrad III and the 2nd Crusade

055: Staufer (Hohenstaufen) I: Conrad III and the 2nd Crusade

The first monarch to start off the Staufer dynasty (often Hohenstaufen in English after their castle) is Conrad III. His reign is marked by difficulties and spends time practically to poor to leave Parma, starts his career as an anti-king, goes to Jerusalem as a pilgrim, and later as a crusader. And not even an Emperor is above Malaria.

054: Medieval Medicine and Science: Hildegard of Bingen

054: Medieval Medicine and Science: Hildegard of Bingen

Saint Hildegard is one of only four women Doctors of the Church. A 12th century visionary and medical author, Hildegard is making a pretty big comeback in folk medicine (in German speaking countries). There's a lot more to her story, and she gives a rare insight into women's lives in the high medieval period.

AyoLagos ,

Structure please!

I have been enjoying this, but it is not the podcast to make you literate in German history if you don’t already have a good idea about it. For example, #50 assumes one knows about Prussia, its culture and how it came to be. Whereas one probably has just a caricature in mind. (Btw, #50 has moments of hilarity which had people on the streets of Lagos turning to look when I laughed out loud, but still ...)
Travis clearly knows his subject really well, but only about 50% of what is running through his head seems to make it into the podcast, so episodes come across as disjointed. Informality and pop culture references are fine, and I learned to live with ‘anyways’, but so many references to ‘spoiler alert!’, what ‘we’re going to get to’ and unfinished sentences ... make it stop! Please!
I came to realise that I enjoyed the early shows because - due to listening to other history podcasts - I could put what Travis was talking about into context.
Having come this far, I will continue to the last episode (October 2019), but hoping for more chronology and coherence if and when the series resumes.

Disjointed

It's not an easy listen. Travis talks over his guests, assumes a lot of prior knowledge and flow is lacking. I've persevered to the latest episode....currywurst!? In terms of German history, podcast listeners are not well served.

History of Germany

Travis, you have researched to subject in great detail but could you try to avoid "yeah right", "wow", "and all that stuff" and "you know".
