Eva Hovelsrød, doll clothing maker and owner of Tirin & Katten on In The Doll World doll podcast

Eva Hovelsrød, doll clothing maker and owner of Tirin & Katten on In The Doll World doll podcast

A wonderful conversation with Eva Hovelsrød, doll clothing maker, artist and owner of Tirin & Katten on In The Doll World doll podcast.

Eva shares with us a very different background coming into the doll world,  from a background  in computer science  for over years to doll clothing designer.  She  discovered dolls in 2013 via an interest in knitting, and was soon up past midnight most nights, working on doll-related projects.

The urge to make doll clothes took her by surprise--stating "I have never thrown myself quite like that into a hobby before. I found a very friendly and supportive online community.  Dolls are an outlet for all kinds of interests and I have tried a few, like wig making and shoemaking; but, I try to stick to sewing"

Eva started out sewing for Blythe dolls, but has lots of different dolls. Currently,  she sews most often for a Korean BJD brand called iMda.

She is also eager to  help others experience the joy of making little garments!

"I am also passionate about usability, no doubt because of my background in computer science. When I put together tutorials, I aim for them to be accessible also to people without much sewing experience, while being clear and concise. I spend a lot of time on each tutorial. This causes me to put off making new ones, so I have an internal dialog going about how I can improve the process, and what kind of tutorials and patterns to make in the future."

Valerie Gladstone, Owner of Brooklyn Dollworks and Award Winning Artist on In The Doll World doll podcast

Valerie Gladstone, Owner of Brooklyn Dollworks and Award Winning Artist on In The Doll World doll podcast

The amazing Valerie Gladstone, award winning artist and owner of Brooklyn Dollworks joins us for a wonderful conversation about her journey into creating art dolls. www.inthedollworld.com/creators

Valerie's journey into dolls was not your typical journey into doll making.  As a self confessed tom boy she didn't really play with dolls, but was very creative.  She trained in painting, costume design, wig and makeup design, needlecraft, ceramics, and photography.

An amazing featured article and picture in Art Doll Quarterly caught her eye and jumpstarted her journey into Art Dolls where she thought she could apply all her varied skills into one item.   Working in the theatre for so many years, she enjoys telling stories; each doll, even if they are part of a series, has to speak on its own.

She started taking them on tour and during that time, she had another chance encounter that led to her most eclectic work being recognized and winning awards.

For Valerie, the creative process begins with inspiration. The inspiration can come from a historical fact, a piece of fabric, or the need to try a new technique. She prefers to work in series, like her New York series which comes from the love of my hometown, which she elaborates more on in the podcast.

Her art dolls are passionate and powerful.  She shares how important it is to to have intention for what you are creating.

Ria Mendoza Hoyt, Doll Artist and Owner of OrangeJar.com on In The Doll World doll podcast

Ria Mendoza Hoyt, Doll Artist and Owner of OrangeJar.com on In The Doll World doll podcast

In The Doll World doll podcast is joined by  Ria Mendoza Hoyt, award winning doll artist and owner of OrangeJar.com for a wonderful interview at www.inthedollworld.com/creators

Ria shares with us that her doll journey came a little later in life. In 2010, she began using polymer clay while taking a class a one-day class. In that class, she learned the traditional methods for making clay pots in Sharjah, UAE. She fell in love with clay and continued making a variety of items and figures using clay.

It wasn't until 2015, when Ria attended her first doll making class. A year later, she earned first place in a couple of local state fairs. In 2019, she joined the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild (PDMAG). The next year, she won three PDMAG Gold Awards.

In her interview Ria speaks about her desire to make Filipino dolls. "Being Filipino, I started with the goal of creating dolls wearing traditional Filipiniana clothes." She also spoke about the difficulty with finding clay in skin tones that reflect the beautiful people in her native land.

Ria's  doll journey continues to evolve. Currently, she is focusing on fantastical creatures: "I love creating from mythology, folk lore, fantasy. Then, I add my own little dark twist!"

"Doll making is still an ongoing learning process [for me]". She says she continues working to balance her doll making and her life. "There are years when I only made one or two dolls. I am buckling down and making it my goal, to always create, improve, learn, and repeat, and continue pushing this journey forward."

Ria will also be hosting a free class on Budget Friendly Photo Studio  at the upcoming Professional Dollmakers Art Guild (PDMAG),  Online Convention being held Oct 15th-24th, visit www.pdmagconvention.com
