Nikki Graves, CEO of Trinity Designs, Inc. on In The Doll World
A very delightful and powerful conversation with Nikki Graves, CEO of Trinity Designs, Inc. www.inthedollworld.com
Nikki’s journey into doll making did not start with a love of dolls, surprisingly she was not into dolls at all but out of her desire to find a doll that was a tribute to her sorority as a Delta, and with no luck finding one, Nikki decided to take matters into her own hands and develop a doll that represented her and her sorority. That decision led to her creating not only her own doll but has expanded into a line of dolls that celebrate the Divine 9 sororities.
Nikki also shares the journey she has taken to building a doll company, the challenges, triumphs and how emotional she felt with creating and then seeing her first doll, from concept to something tangible. Once she saw it, she knew other sororities would want one of their own and she realized she wanted to continue to create and celebrate black beauty through dolls.
We also get to talk about her companies endeavor to produce high quality collectibles that inspire, captivate, and encourage young women and children to love the skin they’re in and the importance of having a doll company owned by a woman of color and what that represents for diverse doll creations.
Nikki also has a wonderful surprise for everyone as she shares information about the growth and expansion of the company into creating other types of dolls that will be coming in 2023. Some truly exciting news.

Hope Ivy Mason, Doll Artist and Guild Award doll artist winner.
Joining us on In The Doll World is Hope Ivy Mason, Award winning international doll artist,
3-time Professional Doll Makers Art Guild Doll Artist Winner. www.inthedollworld.com
This is our 2nd episode of our In The Doll World collaboration with the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild (PDMAG) as the Media Partner for their upcoming online convention, which will celebrate doll artists within PDMAG.
Hope shares a beautiful conversation with me on In The Doll World. From her diverse background as an Ordained Minster to founder of a non-profit for Cancer survivors, she talks about her unexpected journey into discovering silicone baby dolls and that began turned into creating beautiful dolls of her own and becoming an award-winning doll artist.
As her skills grew, there was more to learn and that’s when her friend and mentor Master artist, Maisa Said, who helped her tremendously during this doll creating journey, knew it was time to for her to grow further and referred her to the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild.
Hope learned many more skills while at the Guild, including sculpting from a portrait. As Hope progressed so did the level of her work which has produced amazing work and has also won her several awards.
In our conversation, Hope also shares with us a little announcement of new mediums she will be working in, besides silicone. It sounds very interesting, and I can't wait to see what she produces with it.
Hope is forever grateful to her mentor for introducing her to the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild. Hope states, “being in a space like PDMAG, is not only for beginners, but it is also a very important place for even seasoned artists, it allows them to continue to grow and share their knowledge as well” and as an artist there is always new things to learn and new skills to develop. PDMAG encourages artists, through amazing workshops, courses taught by current and past members and mentors.
This year the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild will be offering a free online convention Oct 14-16th, 2022, where people can attend free classes, workshops and meet some of the talented artists that are part of the guild and see their amazing work.

Sandra Maxwell, BJD Artist and owner of Sandra Maxwell Studios
I had a delightful conversation with Sandra Maxwell, BJD Artist and owner of Sandra Maxwell Studios, best known for her 7" resin ball jointed Punkin Pie dolls. Sandra is also one of the heads of the upcoming Professional Doll Makers Art Guild Online Convention. www.inthedollworld.com
This is our first episode of our In The Doll World collaboration with the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild (PDMAG) as the Media Partner for their upcoming online convention, which will celebrate doll artists within PDMAG.
Sandra’s doll journey started years ago with her making dolls using patterns from the old Women's Day and Family Circle magazines that her mother bought. She says her poor mother would get a magazine that was all cut up because Sandra would get to them first before her mother could get a chance to read them. Money was sometimes tight in the household, and she knew that if she wanted to have dolls, this was the only way for her to get them. Sandra was always making things because that was the only way to have the dolls and other things she wanted, hence she made her first homemade cabbage patch doll, which wound up being featured in her High School play.
After she got married and started a family, she became acquainted with reborn dolls; and then thought she might like to try sculpting. She started sculpting on her own and created a few reborn dolls, but realized she had an affinity for little dolls and decided to try her hand at creating ball jointed (articulated) dolls.
Sandra started creating little BJD dolls, and while she was working on them, she started naming them little Punkins…and the Punkin Line was born.
Although she created dolls in polymer clay, porcelain and other media, she's probably best known for her Punkin line of 7" resin ball-jointed dolls (BJDS)
In 2020, she was Industry’s Choice winner in the Dolls Awards of Excellence for her Punkin Pie entry, the first in her Punkin line.

Sherri Roberts-Lumpkin, Founder of Ragbaby Exchange
This was a wonderful interview with a passionate doll and self-esteem advocate, Sherri Roberts-Lumpkin, Founder and Director of the Ragbaby Exchange. Listen at www.inthedollworld.com
The Ragbaby Exchange is a non-profit organization committed to building self-esteem in women and children through doll making.
Sherri shares with us how her career morphed from fashion design major, to graphic artist, to doll maker and how her doll making skills offered her the opportunity to create a unique program that combines doll making with art therapy plus unique therapeutic practices to instill a sense of self-worth and self-love in the participant.
Our passionate and powerful conversation also talks about how, in her workshops, she still sees the continued struggle of children of color perceiving themselves as lesser individuals, and how her continued work through the Ragbaby Exchange demonstrates the continued need for diverse representation through dolls.
Her workshops, “Your Inner Doll" and "Raising a Super Hero”, take deliberate steps toward the process of discovering how to achieve acceptance of one’s emotional well-being, and gives participants an opportunity to embrace their inner and outer beauty as expressed in and through the doll; a doll that allows them to put a little more love into their own hearts.
We also talk about how the pivot she had to make due to the pandemic created a unique way for her to bring her doll making and self-esteem workshops to more people online.

Noel Cruz, Distinguished Repaint Artist
In The Doll World is joined by most versatile & distinguished repaint artists in the doll community Noel Cruz. www.inthedollworld.com/episodes
I have always admired his brilliant work and what a wonderful conversation we had as he shared his journey from drawing portraits since the age of 12 to becoming such a renowned repaint artist, to repainting the most precious doll in his collection.
Although Noel is most recognized for his character & celebrity-based dolls due to their uncanny resemblance to the people they portray, such as Farrah Fawcett, Lindsey Wagner and Johnny Depp to Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Cher just to name a few in his extensive line of iconic repaints, there is one doll that is not based on a celebrity, and it was during a beautiful moment as he was sharing that doll with me, that I literally was in tears as he talked about the one doll that he had repainted that is the most precious to him.
We also talk about his process, the hardest area for him to repaint as well as the one thing you that you must get right in order to be true to the repaint. Can you guess what they are before you listen to the show?
His dolls are derived from several models like Gene, Tyler, Sydney, etc, by various doll-makers such as Mel Odom, Robert Tonner & Franklin Mint. His repaints as well as his portraits are done with intricate detail to the point of being naturally lifelike in essence.
He also asks to give a big shout out to MEL ODOM for creating the beautiful doll Gene Doll which has been a very versatile canvas for him work with. Thank you, Mel from Noel!
