It’s the dead of summer, 1989, in the heart of the Ozarks. An 18-year-old woman goes missing from Bella Vista, Arkansas. As the search moves forward, several suspects emerge. Then… a body is found not far from the Missouri border, and a homicide investigation begins. Soon, a second body is discovered nearby. What was a mystery transforms into the hunt for a possible serial killer stalking young women throughout the Ozarks. M. William Phelps digs in nearly 35 years later and begins to understand that things aren’t always what they seem.

Pretty good show, but the adverts…
03/12/2023
I’ve rated this based on the quality of the content itself. Phelps is a pretty good storyteller and cares about his subjects. Season 3 is interesting and balanced, though it sometimes jumps about too much between suspects and storylines. I think it could’ve done with a bit more shaping. But it’s sensitively done and brings Tammy to life as a great person and much more than just a victim. The adverts on this show, however, are crazy. They’re repetitive, out-of-keeping with the show and honestly take up about 40% of the episode runtime. I get that iHeart Radio have to balance the books, but it really is way too much.
Outstanding season 4

Such an interesting & tragic case, or should say cases and well told. My heart goes out to the victims
Season Four finale is unbelievably exploitative

I can’t speak to series one to three, having hopped in at season four, but the final episode of season four is one of the most unethical, unpleasant episodes of a true crime series I’ve ever listened to. The interview section is self-aggrandising and tasteless and the detailed, explicit discussion of one of the victims’ deaths feels seedy and objectifying even as the police officer (one of the most credulous people I’ve ever heard speak) insists on her dignity. I feel almost grateful because the episode made me reevaluate my interest in the entire genre. I don’t want to be the target demographic that M William Phelps thought he was making that episode for. Shame on me for even making it that far, frankly.
It's good. Great story telling.

But way too many adverts. I realise the content can't be free, but it's insane the amount of adverts. They go on and on and cut through the story repeatedly. I may have to give up...
