Every playoff team could win the Stanley Cup

On this Monday edition of The Athletic Hockey Show, Ian and Laz discuss Laz’s devil-may-care attitude about singing out loud at the supermarket, little appetite at this week’s GM meetings to make change to 3-on-3 overtime, and potential PWHL expansion.

Plus, to close things out, Jesse Granger and the guys discuss VHL goalie Artemi Pleshkov stopping a record 124 shots in a 1-0 quintuple OT loss and how many teams could realistically win the Stanley Cup this season.

Curse of Colonel Sanders ,

A mixed bag

First off, the Thursday show with Ian Mendes and Sean McIndoe is the best hockey podcast out there, no debate. Fun, informative, just the right amount of irreverence, and a little history thrown in to boot! A perfect blend!

The Monday show has a lot of potential but suffers from a Canadian bias that too frequently takes the show into some bizarre dead ends, e.g. Josh Norris > Jack Eichel; 20+ minutes on Sam Bennett; a discussion about whether Vancouver’s 3-2 win over the Leafs is the “most memorable moment of the 2021 season,” etc. There’s enough Canadian hockey hyperbole out there and we all know where to go if we want overreaction to a Senators victory in April. When 30% of every podcast focuses on the Senators and Flames, this might be a sign you’re in a bit of a bubble...
