Entering the Gladiator Ring with Elly Chapple and George Julian | S4 | E22

The narrative is that as parent carers we often have to fight. Enter the Gladiator ring: for Elly Chapple this began in 2020 with her daughter fighting for her life in ITU and within weeks she was fighting for her family to stay together. In this special episode of The Skies We’re Under Podcast, Elly Chapple and George Julian share the unfolding events and human rights case brought on behalf of Ella when her mother Ellie was removed from her home after child protection proceedings began.  This conversation brings together the many facets of trauma families face. It is a real-life example of parent carer trauma, trauma in people with profound disabilities, systems generated trauma and being brought to the brink. This powerful and vulnerable episode comes with special thanks to Elly and her family for sharing their personal story. Our hope is that by shining a light, lessons can be learned for systems and practitioners so that ultimately children and families are better protected. You can find out more about Elly here. You can see her TEDx Talk here. You can find more about George here. George can also be found on Bluesky here. You can see George’s writing on Elly’s experience here. Parent Carer Suicide: What we need to know | S4 | 21

CONTENT WARNING - This episode contains references to both suicide and homicide. If you think you will find any of these subjects difficult to listen to, please do listen to another of our episodes. We will also have a “Trauma Tap-Out’ on Friday. Join Rachel and Lucy as they battle through various infections, to discuss the very important topic of parent carer suicide. They are joined by Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer, an Associate Professor of Social Care, with expertise in unpaid carers, their experiences and the increased likelihood of them having suicidal thoughts. We know this one is tricky, but we also know that when people share that they feel suicidal, they think they are the only ones to feel this way. We know they aren’t alone, and we want to raise awareness of this amongst our listeners. The following resources are available for support: Samaritans TEL - 116 123 Affinity Hub NHS Urgent Mental Health MIND Urgent Help You can find more about Siobhan here. Traumatised by services? with Dr Ana Aiello | S4 | E20

Research is suggesting the action and inaction of services can cause trauma to parents and caregivers. Systems generated trauma is an emerging term in academia but we suspect many parent carers and practitioners will understand what it means - be able to describe a time they have experienced or witnessed it. In a world where trauma informed practice is heralded as the right way to work, systems and organisations need to also be aware that their own policies, procedures, actions and inactions may in fact be the very source and cause of trauma for parent carers. The Skies We’re Under podcast is delighted to welcome expert Dr Ana Aiello. A researcher and academic who specialises in parent carer blame and is also a sibling. She walks us gently through;  institutionalised parent carer blame  its impact it has on Fabricated Induced Illness (FII) guidance  emerging research on systems generated trauma We hear some stark truths which Lucy and Rachel discuss alongside a general rant about the potential for someone to do a poo just as you are rushing out the door (husband/toddler - delete as appropriate) If you want to dig deeper into Dr Aiello and Dr Clements work: 2021 Parent Carer Blame report https://cerebra.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Final-Parent-Blame-Report-20-July-21-02.pdf 2021 BBC news item on the Parent Carer Blame research https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-57915086> 2023 Fabricated Induced Illness report https://cerebra.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/FII-Final-report-2023-Nov-01.pdf 2023 Channel 5 News programme on the FII research https://x.com/5_News/status/1724851237194023080 A press release about our implementation work on FII - namely, the negative reply of the RCPCH to our request that they amend their FII guidance https://www.lukeclements.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Press-Release.pdf 2024 Systems Generated Trauma Conference: leaflet (attached); webpage with all the resources for this event (including weblinks to some of the presentations on the day) https://cerebra.org.uk/research/building-practical-solutions-for-traumatised-families/ Thanks to the lovely folk at Rose Speech Therapy for sponsoring this week's episode.
