E25: Tesla's Autonomy Gamble: Invest or Avoid? + Founder-Led Debate

E25: Tesla's Autonomy Gamble: Invest or Avoid? + Founder-Led Debate

In Episode 25, Luke reflects on his magnum-opus 50-day portfolio review on X, including selling $AMZN “too early” to buy a couple of cars. We debate whether that was a mistake or using money appropriately to live fully?

    https://twitter.com/7LukeHallard/status/1781627421243908513

Monkey wonders how Luke got through 2008 beating the market by double-digits: was it luck in owning $ISRG at the right time, or an aggressive risk profile appropriate for life-stage and life circumstances?

How to Beat the Market Principle 2: Look for founder-led companies like Tesla's $TSLA Elon Musk, Crowdstrike’s $CRWD George Kurtz and Apple's $AAPL Steve Jobs. What does founder-led mean and why does that matter?

Tesla earnings results included the promise of a lower-price-point entry car and a cross-roads for investors according to Musk: "Only invest in Tesla if you believe we can solve autonomy" -- is this a fair claim to make?

Tesla also made vital regulatory progress in China in terms of autonomous driving which was enough for Monkey to add it to his King of the Jungle portfolio; we review and look back on our strategies and how they've played out thus far, six months into the contest.

E24: The Hidden Costs of Moving Money: A Wise Perspective

E24: The Hidden Costs of Moving Money: A Wise Perspective

This week's podcast is a repost from the 7investing podcast feed, where Luke & Krzysztof are Lead Advisors.

    ---

If you’ve ever travelled abroad or tried to send money across international borders, hidden fees and unfair exchange rates have no doubt been a massive and expensive headache.

In this week's episode of the 7investing podcast, Lead Advisors Luke Hallard & Krzysztof Piekarski sit down with Rina Wulfing, Senior Manager for the North American policy team at Wise ($WIZEY) to discuss the company's original founding story and mission: to empower its users with a transparent system that sends money cost effectively and instantly across borders.

We discuss junk fees — what they are and how Wise is working with regulatory agencies to limit their adverse impact on customers.

We also discuss why direct access to US banking systems is limited to certain types of financial institution, and why this hits US consumers and businesses (and visitors!) in the pocket.

If you ever travel internationally, or are looking to upgrade your legacy banking arrangements, today's episode is a must listen conversation that will give you better insight into the finance industry, and will save you money!

E23: How to Invest in Trends, How Will AI Impact Society, & Tesla's Pricing Strategy for FSD

E23: How to Invest in Trends, How Will AI Impact Society, & Tesla's Pricing Strategy for FSD

The wildlife are getting restless - Badger’s motorcycle has been stolen!

He's making up the cost by ensuring he's invested in the world's greatest companies, and in today's episode, we discuss the first of his investing desirables: does the company align with powerful trends that are shaping the future? Are ethics and doing good for the world part of that requirement? How does a company like Nvidia $NVDA compare with Celsius $CELH or Lululemon $LULU?

Monkey meanwhile urges caution about investing in AI for social, cultural and potentially revolutionary reasons.

Does Tesla’s moves to drop the price of its Full Self Driving (FSD) software suggest visionary brilliance from Elon Musk’s chess game against regulatory pressures, is it more of a marketing strategy or a way to collect more data to widen the company’s lead in self-driving data? Or is it simply a cash grab to juice the top line?!

We’re living in uncertain times that are changing ever more rapidly and we need to keep cautious about all our predictions.

E22: Is Fear Your Financial Foe?

E22: Is Fear Your Financial Foe?

Is fear stopping you from investing and building your wealth?

Investing is risky and fear-inducing, but is also one of the most direct paths to living the life you want.

There are many obstacles, one of the biggest of which is fear. On today’s special Owl’s Nest episode, we define fear and suggest ways to become more intimate with it.

Badger and Monkey discuss the merits and drawbacks of paper trading: is it a useful tool or does it offer false security?

How do poker players and motorcycle enthusiasts train with fear?

What does equanimity mean and how can we cultivate this classic virtue?

When we’re not in control, how can we reframe the bad-beats life throws our way?

The art of mastering yourself is fundamental to investing success. And it all starts with understanding and conquering fear.

E21: Austin Adventures - Apple Vision Pro, Wise HQ, and Tesla Troubles

E21: Austin Adventures - Apple Vision Pro, Wise HQ, and Tesla Troubles

Before returning to the UK, Badger paid his pal Monkey a visit in Austin. Shenanigans ensued, including, but not limited to:

A trip to the Apple $AAPL store to try the Vision Pro headset. Was the demo experience enough to convince Luke to drop Android and buy into Apple’s metaverse aspirations?

Since the Wise $WIZEY Austin headquarters were nearby, we were graciously able to take a tour of the company’s new digs. You’ll hear more about Wise in an upcoming episode, but we do examine a tried and true (?) Peter Lynchian principle: invest in what you know.

Tesla $TSLA released their delivery numbers and they weren’t pretty. We discuss how to think about Tesla's short-term pain, while still having the potential to become the world’s largest company. The ambivalence of forces at play reminded Monkey of Nvidia $NVDA after a shortfall in revenue that was crypto-related. Those who took advantage profited wildly. Is more caution warranted with Tesla at the moment?

Before flying home, Monkey and Mrs. Monkey played a few hours of poker with the Badger. We recorded the footage and analyze the big hand. Annie Duke, what would you have done differently?

E20: Cyborgs, Casino Investing, & Badger's Portfolio Review Lessons

E20: Cyborgs, Casino Investing, & Badger's Portfolio Review Lessons

Monkey badgers Badger about his portfolio review and the insights he's gained thus far. Why did he invest in Sea Limited $SE? What metrics about Cloudflare $NET are giving him pause? Would he buy more now if he didn't own any already? How did knowing Wise as a customer influence his confidence in being a shareholder? $WIZEY

“Money won is ten times sweeter than money earned.” Is investing successfully like winning money from the casino that is “the market”?

Monkey claims we're already cyborgs with our phones glued to our hands and head. Elon Musk moves this sci-fi trajectory further along with his company Neuralink recently enabling a paralyzed person to play chess using only their mind. Check out waitbutwhy.com's deep dive on Neuralink's foundations and how the brain works and the literal mind-altering future for human consciousness. As though AI wasn't enough.

The King of the Jungle portfolio challenge Update: Badger buys $ZS on the strength of the cybersecurity megatrend, while Monkey preaches patience. Worth noting Badger's claim that there's little chance of Monkey catching up to him by the first of November...Any requests for Badger's upcoming trip to the jungles of Austin to pay off his whiskey debt?

Intelligent equity appraisal

Found this podcast having spent a few months listening to others. Each episode is approx 30 mins of two knowledgeable traders discussing their ‘trend’ model portfolio. It’s excellent education, explaining how they value equities, discuss future trends, etc. long term investors who have an ethical perspective to what they’re doing. Would say that this is the best ‘British’ shares podcast I’ve heard, (excellent podcasts from USA, Canada and Australia) although I assume they’d argue they’re international citizens now. Nevertheless, it enables you to be confident about fundamental research. Website is well worth looking at too.
