Western Way of War

A collection of discussions with those in the Profession of Arms that tries to understand the issues around how to fight, and succeed, against adversaries in the 2020s. We pose the questions as whether a single Western Way of Warfare (how Western militaries fight) has been successful, whether it remains fit for task today, and how it might need to adapt in the future? It is complemented by the ‘Adversarial Studies’ project that looks at how adversaries fight. The views or statements expressed by guests are their own and their appearance on the podcast does not imply an endorsement of them or any entity they represent. Views and opinions expressed by RUSI employees are those of the employees and do not necessarily reflect the view of RUSI.
Thought provoking, informative and entertaining

As a retired officer with many years working across defence and national security I have found this podcast to be the most in touch with all aspects of security, not just war. Peter is a superb host, his ability to contextualise and bring out informed knowledge from his guests is the highlight of the podcast (where other podcasts simply allow subject matter experts to lecture). Well done to the production crew too!
Great subject matter

Real insight for some one like wanting to understand modern warfare thinking , which I can follow
Bronk episode excellent

Justin Bronk’s discussion of the challenges faced by western airforces is one of the best WWoW episodes yet. When considered alongside Jack Watling’s excellent episode on western special forces, it just shows how this RUSI podcast doesn’t have to look far for outstanding analytical comment, especially when compared to the often ambiguous rambling of some ‘external’ guests.
Truly insightful podcast featuring contemporary warfighters in the UK

If you’ve ever wondered what the Western way of war is and how fragile it might be - listen to this podcast.
Thought provoking and fascinating.

As someone who left the Military in 99, its fascinating to see how we have evolved, and where the current mindset is. I thought the episode from General David Petraeus was exceptional, although a bitter pill and reality check that we are now just a very minor (albeit useful) player with minimal mass, in an increasingly technologically complex and expensive world. It would be interesting to hear more discussion around sovereign or non US partner capability to see if we are now 100% dependant on the US to plug our capability gaps. Or if there are complex potential short-term threats where we could operate alone or use non US Allies to provide a realistic strategic solution. All the guests have been superb. Only minor critque, the host can sometimes over elaborate points in response, making a great point that the guest could come back on, but keeps talking and steers in a new direction meaning the point is lost. Someone else mentioned there is a lot of agreeing and can sometimes seem like an echo chamber. Maybe a guest that could really challenge the hosts beliefs with some thought provoking argument? But 5/5 highly recommended and look forward to each episode, keep up the good work. Steve Richardson
Great podcast

As a serving officer, big fan of this Podcast and a UK focussed discussion on defence matters with great guest speakers. Some great insights and I find myself frantically scribbling into a notepad when listening. The only thing I would say is that it can feel very negative sometimes. Lots of problems, very few tangible solutions to them. It is also occasionally ill-informed. I ‘face palm’ when we say stuff like ‘We just do not train EW’ and ‘Urban Warfare module at ICSC is essential’. These statements just aren’t true, we routinely train in a contested EM Spectrum, and we go into some depth on ICSC in Urban warfare and scenarios. Perhaps more input from the current serving crop of more junior officers may help address what we are actually not doing, and how we could do it better, as opposed to occasional assumptions that the military is not looking at these issues just because RUSI isn’t. Again, great fan and thanks for creating
Solutions not just problems

I enjoy this podcast, really interesting. Perhaps this is not the point of the podcast, but I would love to hear, in concrete terms, exactly how Britain should fight in the future- how should we confront adversaries in the grey zone? How can we deal with both peer plus state adversaries and terror mist groups in the Middle East and Africa at the same time? Most importantly, what should our grand strategy be? What part should Britain play in the world? Thank you
Further reinforcement: Please slow down

Love the content, it sounds really interesting but the points are said really fast and it takes me a couple of minutes to process each point made.
Slow down please!

I want to like this podcast but the speed of delivery of content, especially the pre-written blurbs up front, are spoken too fast for me to take in. Please think of your audience trying to absorb all the great knowledge and insight you have through just our ears. First two episodes are like drinking from a RUSI firehose.
