What's in the Cup + On My Mind: Liver/Gallbladder Flush FAQ, Why are we being persuaded to reconsider parabens, and (Eco) Beauty shopping plans

I first tried this concept/structure on Episode #24 from mid-May. I really liked the ability to dive deeper into viewer questions, provide in-depth thoughts on current beauty industry dynamics, and of course discuss products – all in one episode! So today we’re first discussing this series of 4 videos I did back in 2014 (L’Amour in YouTube infancy lol) on Andreas Moritz’s The Amazing Liver & Gallbladder Flush. I still get many questions on these videos and this process today (do I recommend it, what do I think, etc) so I give you ALL the details on the multi-year unfolding of these cleanses. Then, you know we have to talk about parabens. We’re being urged to reconsider them, and the science that had us at least take a precautionary stance on their overuse. While I have absolutely no issue with whatever direction brands choose to go in their own formulations, what I can’t ignore are (tacit) agendas and attempts at manipulation. So let’s unpack that, and then end on a soothing note by talking products. I share what I was testing this past week – loving, unsure about – and then discuss the upcoming Pink Moon and Beauty Heroes orders I’m planning/carts I’m curating. All references/links below and continued on lamouretlamusique.com!

Orion Brown, BlackTravelBox: Clean Beauty Essentials to #TravelinColor + An Ongoing Race and Beauty Industry Discussion

Orion Brown, BlackTravelBox: Clean Beauty Essentials to #TravelinColor + An Ongoing Race and Beauty Industry Discussion

I’m so pleased to share a conversation with you today between myself and Orion Brown of BlackTravelBox, a beauty brand offering clean beauty essentials on-the-go for Black and Afro-Latinx travelers. Orion and I are actually University of Chicago classmates from the early 2000s! It was great to connect all these years later, learn about the beauty business she launched in 2017 (after a 15-year career in brand strategy, consumer insights, product and packaging innovation and portfolio management).

    In today’s conversation we cover:

*How Orion’s love for travel developed, and the problems she faced as a WOC trying to bring sufficient and effective personal care products (particularly hair care) for long international trips
*A walk-thru of the products in BlackTravelBox’s range
*Orion’s experience of the global pandemic (as someone who relied on travel for self care), and her thoughts on pivoting or iterating her brand as our current social landscape is altered
*Deeply problematic beauty industry marketing that socializes women and girls into normative standards of white beauty and considers everything else an aberration
*Why BlackTravelBox is “for everyone” but Orion’s real thoughts when white women ask if it’s “for them” (and why her marketing clearly targets WOC)
*Mentorship for WOC and the problem of a lot of free advice but a lack of true support
*Some of Orion’s favorite beauty brands of the moment and her travel inspiration during quarantine

And of course much more. Orion is so articulate and engaging and I am happy to put this brand on your radar. If you are looking for sustainable, minimal, portable, eco hair and body care that’s made in the US (Colorado specifically), and to support a WOC beauty brand – please do check out BlackTravelBox. There’s a special offer for Your Purpose is Beauty listeners below.

Ava Zhan, Earthwise Beauty + Pacific Northwest Essences: Potent and Healing Organic Beauty

Ava Zhan, Earthwise Beauty + Pacific Northwest Essences: Potent and Healing Organic Beauty

I’m so honored to bring you a conversation today with someone who is frequently described as a “wizard” of skincare – Ava Zhan, of Earthwise Beauty and Pacific Northwest Essences. Ava’s decades of experience in herbalism, skincare formulation, aromatherapy, and her most recent focus on flower and gem essence healing/therapy is profoundly inspiring. Her luxury organic skincare products are exceptionally potent and healing, and once you dive into the brand you’ll find yourself not wanting to use anything else (this has been my experience and I’ve heard it echoed by many others!).

    In today’s conversation we cover:

*How Ava initially became interested in skincare and herbalism (health food stores played a big role!)
*Ava’s favorite ingredients and draw to the Brazilian Amazon
*Essential oils DO have a place in skincare (and there is a lot of misinformation and misuse happening)
*Beauty from the inside out and what topicals can and can’t do
*Why Ava decided to pursue serious study of flower and gem essence healing after decades of studying various holistic therapies
*Esoteric and “high vibrational” beauty – what does this really mean and how do we feel or know this aspect of a product?

And much more. I could have talked to Ava all afternoon. I hope you feel moved to investigate these beautiful products. If you stay tuned to the end of the episode, I discuss some of my favorite Earthwise products so far, in advance of more extended video content I’m planning (including a video next month on the 5 oils/oilserums in Earthwise’s line, and a comprehensive Brand Review this autumn). Please enjoy!

Summer 2020 Face and Body (Eco) SPF Line Up (+ musings on healthy sun exposure, physical v. chemical sunscreen & toddler-approved sun care)

Summer 2020 Face and Body (Eco) SPF Line Up (+ musings on healthy sun exposure, physical v. chemical sunscreen & toddler-approved sun care)

In 2015 I did a face sunscreen/tinted moisturizer/cc cream line up video on YouTube and it’s hard to believe I haven’t really done a dedicated update on this topic! I have done many stand-alone reviews of products like Ayuna Velo, Honua Malu, Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream and so on but it was certainly time to revisit this topic. This time it’s in a tightly edited way – I’ll be rotating between three facial SPF products this summer, and this truly feels like my dream team of sun care. I also discuss some of my favorite body SPFs, including what I love using on Baby L’Amour who is about to turn 20 months (what is life).

(Eco) Beauty News: Recent Favorites, Some Misses, What's in the Mail & Huge Health Inspiration

Another week of recording snuck up on me but thankfully I never have a shortage of beauty and alternative health things to discuss at a moment’s notice! Today I’m sharing a few recent favorites (luxe deodorant, day serums, and a perfect summer night cream), a couple of misses (*insert raised eyebrow emoji*), some new and noteworthy beyond beauty finds (can home cleaning products be gorgeous?), what I’m expecting in the mail, and a recent holistic health discovery that has me incredibly inspired and researching more.

Taking A Moment From Beauty: Imperfect Reflections on Inequality and Race in America, Urban Soc, and Self-Reliance as Anti-Racism Practice

Taking A Moment From Beauty: Imperfect Reflections on Inequality and Race in America, Urban Soc, and Self-Reliance as Anti-Racism Practice

The title of today’s episode sums it up. I wanted to speak from both my heart, and my sociologically trained mind on current events. I also feel very strongly that self-reliance is an integral part of anti-racism and anti-inequality work for people with social and racial privilege. I touched on this at the end, but frankly it needs another whole episode to dig deeper.
