둥그런 무언가가 굴러 다니고 있었어.
몇 년 전 여름,
그날은 유난히 번개가 많이 치는 밤 이었어.
마치 내 머리 위로 번개가 내리치지 않을까 걱정스러웠던 그런 밤.
엘리베이터를 타면서 혹시나 번개 때문에 정전이 되면 어쩌지 싶었는데
기다렸다는 듯이 천둥소리와 거의 동시에 엘리베이터가 멈춰버렸지.

내가 사는 지역은 시골이라 놀이터가 없어서
근처의 폐 신사가 놀이터이자 집합소였다.
많을 때는 7명, 적을 때는 3명 정도 모여서
담배를 피우거나 술을 마시거나 했다.

내가 초등학교 6학년일 무렵,
무척 사이가 좋던 S라는 친구가 있었다.
우리는 대개 S네 아파트에 모여서 놀곤 했다.
그 날 역시 S와 다른 친구 3명이 서 함께
S네 집에서 당시 유행하던 게임을 하며 놀고 있었다.
그렇게 놀던 와중, S가 갑자기 생각났다는 듯 우리에게 말했다.
