Open Ocean Mining and Decarbonization (Bozesan, Schmachtenberger, Barron, Smitsman)
Abundant clean energy is central to the decarbonization of the global economy. Yet, the production of wind, solar and geothermal power, as well as energy storage requires massive amounts of natural resources such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper, to name a few. The best land ores are already being mined from rainforests and pristine landscapes and generate large toxic waste. The question is: How can humanity close the natural resource gap to achieve the transition to clean energy by 2050? To address this question, I have invited: Gerard Barron, the CEO and Founder of The Metals Company, that will enable the battery-powered shift to clean energy and electric vehicles "with the lightest planetary touch". Gerard is a builder of global companies in battery technology, media, and future-oriented resource development, and on a mission to help transition Earth away from fossil fuels and toward a circular-resource economy. And Daniel Schmachtenberger the Founder of the Civilization Research Initiative and its publication, the Consilience Project . Daniel is recognized as a deep thinker on the topics of catastrophic risks and has made novel contributions to the field in terms of theoretical insights on how to address issues of exponential technology, planetary boundaries, and coordination challenges. He also helps advise strategy on applied initiatives towards these goals. My co-interviewer is systems scientist and futurist Dr. Anneloes Smitsman. In this interview, we discuss: 2:52 Meta Crisis, catastrophic and existential risks, planetary boundaries, exponential tech, nuclear tech, environmental crisis, pollution, materials economy, AI, nano tech 16:32 IEA, 600% more metals needed for circularity, the energy needs for the transition to carbon neutrality 19:37 abyssal zone, nodules, robot on the ocean floor, polymetallic nodules, key metals for energy transition, low bio diversity, deep ocean mining, International Seabed Authority, mitigating the plume, no waste, real game changer for the mining and metals industry, environmental impact study, biodiversity 25:45 peer reviewed journals showed that you can reduce CO2 emissions by more than 90% when you build a battery cathode using these rocks compared to the land-based alternatives, 90% less freshwater when we process nodules compared to land-based ores, nickel, Convention of the Law of the Sea 33:07 Strict regulation, Corporate sustainability, noise regulation 37:42 University of Hawaii, National Oceanography Center, Great Barrier Reef 41:13 toxic waste product, mining, tropical rainforests, fracking, tar sands, meta-analysis on biodiversity metrics 52:22 NASDAQ TMC, The Metals Company 1:13:41 tradeoffs between surface mining and alternative energy storage technologies, how to create a closed loop material economy Enjoy the show and share it widely!
