On today’s podcast, we will be exploring the public opinion that was present in the United States during the Vietnam War era. In American history, the Vietnam War is truly one of the darkest memories for Americans. It was an event that was filled with controversy, since so many people disagreed on whether the war was the right move for America at the time. The topic of discussion today is going to be about how the American people’s opinion on the Vietnam War was shaped due to the way the media covered the events occurring. In order to properly show how much fluctuation there was in public opinion about the war at the time, we will be discussing the public’s position at the beginning of the war. At the beginning of the war, it was found that that was the time that the American people supported the war the most. In continuation with that discussion, we will talk about the opinions during the War. There were a couple significant events, such as the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the Tet Offensive, and the Mai Lai Massacre, that created a significant shift in the public opinion. Included in this podcast will be three general subtopics: The early war opinion, the Gulf of Tonkin, the Tet Offensive and the Mai Lai Massacre.
