Tell me when we are going to talk about the millions of dogs out there that living in homes that the people owning them do not have the time to dedicate the time to figure out how to get a dog to not bite another dog. I think she is a great dog trainer, but she has the ability to take more time than the average dog owner. I think she can assist me in helping my training, but if I am not a dog trainer that can dedicate my life to dog training. Ban the electric collar and you will kill many dogs.
Good podcast

Absolutely loved the episode on the Iditarod with Dallas Seavey. Like Ivan, I really wanna travel to Alaska and experience that. Not normally a fan of long podcasts but this one flew by. Would love to see you have him on again.

Not very far into it, only partway through the third episode and while I really appreciate Ivan trying to bring in a balanced look from the research end, the way they describe what’s going on makes me cringe. The way they talk about shocking the dog and I know Ivan knows better, it’s almost like every time you press a button the dog is getting some huge jolt of electricity. In the third episode I got as far as the guest say that only trained professionals should use remote collars and it seems as though he has no actual understanding of their youth outside some laboratory/research setting. After using remote collar’s for over 30 years myself and my remote collar foundation at the hands of skilled professionals, I too am incredibly apprehensive of their widespread use but the answer is not too ban but to educate in my opinion. I believe Ivan feels the same way. Anybody that actually trained dogs with remote collars for long enough knows that many dogs will have a behavior change on an intensity which could only be described as sensation. No one in their right mind would call it painful. They’ve never talked so far that I have heard about a dogs individual sensitivity to sensation, some dogs are very sensitive physically and some are very stoic. I’ve never heard them so far speak about a dogs sensitivity in drive or arousal where by and large they are much much less sensitive to sensation. They’re such simple analogies for so many things that are non-science space people find so easy to understand. Example: takeoff your shoes and walk down a gravel road and it will probably be very uncomfortable. If suddenly a grizzly bear charges you out of the woods you will sprint down that road and not even feel your feet. That’s such an easy example for a dog in and out of drive/arousal to help people understand their reduce sensitivity. Sure, not scientific but it’s really easy to help non-scientific people understand. I’ve never heard anyone so far speak about a dogs mental sensitivity which is how the dog perceived physical pressure as opposed to its physical sensitivity. I never seem to here almost anyone talk about using the collar to create new habits and behaviors so you don’t need the collar. People talk about it like you’re going to use the collar forever unless you’ve used it in some type of non-contextual blast to keep them away from cars, cattle, snakes or whatever, as a goal should be to see a fading of collar use as the dogs behaviors become more conditioned and ingrained. If you are using a remote collar to routinely enforce commands over an extended period of time you are doing nothing more than managing behavior not changing it. Hopefully at some point I’ll hear someone discuss auditory exclusion and how the remote collar is the most effective way to intervene in that situation at a distance. I’ll keep listening and hopes down the road that he interviews someone that seems to have a better actual working knowledge of the incredibly wide variety and variations of use their art to humanely and effectively train dogs. I imagine Ivan does but so far it’s just been lost in talking about “shocking and punishment.” Again, high hopes and fingers crossed to hear a better explanation for those that need it but beyond preaching to the choir I’m not sure a lot of novice trainers or people trying to decide on a positive only or balanced approach would be comfortable with a balanced approach as they discuss matters as they have.
I LOVE IVAN!
