Episode 144: The Pledge with Ron Aiello

Episode 144: The Pledge with Ron Aiello

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with US Marine Vietnam Veteran, and co-founder of The United States War Dogs Association, Inc., Ron Aiello. ⁣

Aiello had the honor of serving with the First Marine Scout Dog Platoon from 1964 to 1970. He and his dog Stormy were one of the first thirty Marine Scout Dog Teams to be deployed to Vietnam in early 1966, and the gents discuss what it was like working with a 6’ leash and a pistol, having her literally save his life, as Aiello recounts harrowing tales of Stormy’s abilities, to find, alert, and protect her team from weapons, booby traps, and enemy soldiers. And ultimately, what it was like to give Stormy to her next handler, future unknown, and leave her behind.⁣

In 2000, Ron and four other Vietnam Veteran dog handlers formed The United States War Dogs Association, Inc. in Stormy’s memory and honor. USWDA is a nonprofit organization of former and current US military dog handlers and supporting members. The USWDA is committed to promoting the long history of the military service dogs, establishing permanent war dog memorials, and educating the public about the invaluable service of these MWDs.⁣

Aiello has been guiding his organization as president, ensuring that our deployed US MWD Teams receive complete support (especially post 9/11) through “Operation Military Care, K9” through care packages and letter-writing correspondence. The organization has sent more than 25,000 care packages to teams, and has helped adopt hundreds of retired dogs to date. The work the USWDA doesn’t end there, as they provide follow up care for medical expenses for the dogs as well, which can be lifesaving and a huge relief for the adopters. Aiello has also been a consultant for numerous, film producers, screenwriters, book authors, and national and local newspapers.⁣

Aiello has also been on numerous television shows and has done many radio interviews, promoting Operation Military Care, K9, explaining why MWDs are an asset to the Armed Forces of America.  Ron’s background in military war dog service and his dedication to honoring the memory of the service and sacrifice of the US MWDs gives him a unique perspective that he can use to educate the public on the history of military war dogs.⁣

Aiello still doesn’t know what happened to Stormy after the war, but luckily, many laws have gone into ensuring our MWDs are taken care of, and brought back home after their service. So sit down, and reflect on our country’s long standing use of MWDs. Help is honor Stormy, and all the dogs before her and after her, and check out Aiello’s website, and consider donating!⁣

Episode 143: Anyplace. Anytime. Anywhere with Rudy Parsons

Episode 143: Anyplace. Anytime. Anywhere with Rudy Parsons

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 and Ted @Ted_summers, sit down with USAF Master Sergeant Rudy Parsons. ⁣

Parsons has over a decade experience as a USAF Pararescueman, and seven years with the Kentucky Air National Guard. Parsons has five deployments, and three humanitarian (CivilSAR) deployments. With all of this experience, Parsons started his own SAR K9 Program based on Pararescue mission in Haiti after earthquake in 2010. USAF Special Operators jumped into Haiti to open up a non operational airport and land aircraft for relief. Some members of that team spent three days searching a certain pile of rubble for survivors and found none. After three days, FEMA showed up with K9 and searched the pile in under 20 mins, discovering there was no one alive in the pile. That was the birth of the the concept for Parsons’ program three years ago.⁣

The gents also discussed Parsons’ 4 year old Dutchie, K9 Callie. Callie was procured from PennVet Working Dog Center under Dr Cindy Otto and she is the only Search and Rescue K9 in the entire DoD, and is trained for free fall, helicopter infil/exfil, Maritime Operations, tactical wheeled vehicles, technical rope rescue, alpine and cold weather travel according to military qualifications. K9 Callie is also certified in area scent, live find, USAR (FEMA Equivalent Cert), Wilderness (NSDA and DHS Certs), and Avalanche (C-RAD Cert this winter). ⁣

This pair is truly impressive; so be sure to sit down, listen up, and learn a thing or two! ⁣

Episode 142: In Honor of Duco, with Rick Hogg

Episode 142: In Honor of Duco, with Rick Hogg

Your hosts, Eric and Ted, sit down with Rick Hogg, the owner of War HOGG Tactical, Inc. and 29 year US Army Special Operation Combat Veteran, including being a Special Operations K9 handler, and the infamous K9 Duco’s handler.

We would like to have a moment of silence for retired Special Operations Forces K9 Duco, who passed away earlier last month

Hogg has over a dozen combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, and given recent political/foreign events, your hosts delve into Hogg’s opinions on the 1st Amendment and being silenced. (Hogg also goes on a bit of a Eric-Style rant about Big Tech!!)

In 2002, Hogg took his combat deployment experience, as well as his teaching experience as a Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat instructor, and harnessed them into a proven training methodology service company, War HOGG Tactical, Inc. when my Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat students returned from Afghanistan and said "That stuff you taught me saved my life!” (“That stuff” now consists of professional comprehensive mobile firearms, tactical and K9 training to law abiding civilians, military and law enforcement agencies through combat proven techniques and experience to improve students skill ability.) Hogg has trained with numerous law enforcement agencies at the local, state, and federal level, in addition to foreign militaries in marksmanship, room clearing, and K9 operations.

Hogg is a busy man, doing incredible things for the community. So be sure to sit down, listen up, and learn a thing or two from this legend!

    Episode 141: Nordstrom’s = Gladiator School

    Episode 141: Nordstrom’s = Gladiator School

Your hosts, Eric and Ted, sit down with Dustin Winn, Canine Trainer & Instructor, and go through Winn’s remarkable career.⁣

Winn began his career in 1999 as a United States Marine Corps Working Dog Handler when he graduated from the 341st Training Squadron, Military Working Dog Handler Course in Lackland Air Force Base Texas.  During his active duty career in the Marine Corps, Winn was deployed to "Ground Zero", Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Enduring Freedom. After his active duty service, Winn continued his career as a contracted canine trainer with private security companies tasked with the physical protection of U.S. dignitaries in the Middle East. In 2012, Winn left the Middle East and took a position as a Multi-Purpose Canine (MPC) Trainer with Naval Special Warfare (yeah, same place Eric worked ) where he served for two years before taking a position with the Department of Defense as an MPC Instructor. The Boys even chat about things they learned from the other units, and how MARSOC does it a little … differently⁣. During the last 20 years, Winn has honed his dog training skills, and has developed a unique training style through experiences and lessons learned. His passion for dog training, and desire to create an unbreakable bond between dog and owner, is second to none. ⁣

Episode 140:⁣ The Smell with Sinead Imbaro

Episode 140:⁣ The Smell with Sinead Imbaro

Your hosts, Eric and Ted, sit down with Sinead Imbaro to discuss two of her biggest passions: fitness training, and dog training.

Imbaro has worked as a K-9 police and military trainer for more than two decades. After moving from Canada to Florida, Imbaro became a personal trainer and manager at a gym. For the last seven years, a big part of her fitness inspiration has come from training her Malinois, Magnus. Magnus is trained in narcotics, and SAR, and the pair even competed on America’s Top Dog.

Imbaro and Magnus were recently involved in the Surfside SAR efforts down in Miami as well. This gut-wrenching episode is one you owe it to yourself, and to the survivors and victims of the collapse, to listen to.

Good show

Anyone who works dogs will enjoy and learn from this podcast. I do search and rescue, but I have benefited from tracking and trailing, scent theory, and ecollar training tips from a variety of dog handlers. I have really enjoyed the interviews from service member handlers. Keep them coming!

Preliminary review

First episode I listened to was markers in decoying. There seemed to be so little content on the topic with the majority of the show being commercials, promoting gear, and chatter. I came as part of my lifelong education of working K9s, SWAT dogs, and protection dogs, and I was looking for better content and less unrelated talk. I will continue to listen to give the show a fair chance. Just my opinion. I like to get to the point.

Amazing Episode

This is the second time I’ve listened to this episode tonight. I’m doing it to honor Harlej and Jared on Harlej’s anniversary of EOW. I always love your episodes and learn a lot as a personal dog owner. RIP Hero Harlej. Keep rocking it Ted and Eric.
