Making the GOP a Little More Gay

Making the GOP a Little More Gay

"Gay" and "Republican" might seem like identities that don't really go together, but to the Log Cabin Republicans, that is exactly who they are.

The origins of the Log Cabin Republicans, though, are about as far from what you are probably imagining as you can get.

Reverend Raymond Broshears worked tirelessly for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, the elderly, and sex workers in San Francisco. He was also the progenitor of the Log Cabin Republicans. Buckle up because this one is a wild ride.

A huge thank you to Sam from Labor Jawn for joining me last minute! You can check them out wherever you get your podcasts.

[Sidebar] The Canned Heat Wave of 1963

[Sidebar] The Canned Heat Wave of 1963

There is quite a bit of disagreement regarding how to handle the results of our modern opioid epidemic. In Philadelphia, Mayor Cherelle Parker, amidst heavy criticism, "cleaned up" one of the largest encampments where people lived and used out in the open. This is not Philadelphia's first brush with a neighborhood overwhelmed by addiction. In 1963, 31 people mysteriously died all over Philadelphia's Skid Row neighborhood. You might find what and who was at fault surprising.

It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me

It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me

The Chevalier d'Eon is one of those historical figures who pop up now and again, mostly because no one knows what to do with them. Were they a trans woman? A man masquerading as a woman for political reasons? Outside of salacious curiosity about their sex and gender, do they actually matter? This week, Fayge and Mazal dive into d'Eon's life to explore how we talk about queer historical figures respectfully. D'Eon was also just a wild individual outside of any questions of gender.Further Reading:The Chevalier d'Eon and His Worlds—This book is a compilation of papers by experts in various fields, each trying to untangle d'Eon's story in their own way. Some of these papers are rather old and, as such, contain outdated language for transgender people.

There are a few other books on d'Eon, but I found the variety of opinions helpful in better understanding the debates surrounding them.

Slow, and Daily, Tampering With the Mysteries of the Brain

“I hold this slow, and daily, tampering with the mysteries of the brain to be immeasurably worse than any torture of the body.” Charles Dickens, 1842

Eastern State Penitentiary dominates Fairmount Ave in Philadelphia. The physical structure is intimidating, but the stories of the horrors that happened there are even more terrifying. Interestingly, though, the people who founded Eastern State and the man who designed it, John Haviland, thought they were creating a more humane and effective prison. They were wrong. This week, Mazal and Fayge look at the life and career of the architect John Haviland, the legacy of his most famous structure, and the psychological impacts of solitary confinement.Further Reading: (Some links below are affiliate links that earn a commission for purchases made at no additional cost to you)The Prison at Philadelphia Cherry Hill by Teeters and Shearer

Great Podcast Title (and Great Podcast in General)

It was the clever podcast title that first got my attention. But I stayed because, even when it’s someone I’ve heard of before, I get new-to-me facts and a different perspective. And while I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy a podcast that seemed so Philly-centric (I’m in SoCal), those little asides turn out to be the fun cherries on top of interesting history info sundaes.

The Real Jack Maher ,

One Guest’s Perspective

Fayge and Mazal are such good hosts. They really did their homework and came prepared with thoughtful questions and excellent reflections regarding "Poppy." I am indebted to them for their scholarship, their kindness and their care. (Jack Maher, author of “Poppy: A Novel About A Colorful Colorado Life.”)

A delight!

D Listers of History is an absolute delight! Fayge and Isa provide the perfect balance of humor & history. I’ve learned (and laughed) so much already, and can’t wait to hear more!
